Job summary

A governmental department in the UK is seeking an Agricultural Instructor to join their team at HMP Prescoed. Overview

Location: Cilwrgi Farm, HMP Prescoed, Pontypool, Torfaen, South Wales

Grade: Band 4

Salary: GBP33,275.00 (plus a 20% unsocial hours payment). 3 Bedroom Subsidised onsite accommodation is available.

Summary of Role

HMP Prescoed is the only open prison in Wales and includes Cilwrgi farm which is over 400 acres in size. The Farm and land-based activities attached comprise a commercial dairy herd, coniferous woodland and timber processing mill with farm shop & market garden. We need a flexible, motivated, and committed individual to join our cheerful, hardworking, and award-winning team of farm staff.

We are looking for a capable Agricultural Instructor who can not only train and assess prisoners in vocational qualifications but who can also develop their confidence and life skills invaluable for their rehabilitation into the community.

The successful candidate will ideally have experience in a supervisory role, must be conversant with good animal husbandry procedures, routine veterinary treatments, grassland management and generic stockmanship & farm tasks. They should also have experience of using tractors, attachments, machinery, and equipment. Knowledge of robotic milking equipment would be desirable.

  • Train and assess prisoners in vocational qualifications related to agriculture.
  • Develop prisoners’ confidence and life skills to support rehabilitation into the community.
  • Contribute to a safe and productive farm environment across dairy, woodland, and market garden operations.
Qualifications
  • Hold a Level 3 qualification in agriculture or a recognised agricultural industry equivalent.
  • Hold PA2 and PA6 pesticide qualification is desirable but not essential.
  • Have A1 or TAQA assessor accreditation or be willing to work towards and obtain within 2 years.
  • Have current knowledge of all relevant Health and Safety and Control of Substances Hazardous to Health (COSHH) regulations.
  • Hold a full current United Kingdom (UK) driving license to enable tractor and other vehicle driving operations in the course of duties, in addition to prisoner instruction duties on farm vehicles.
