Job description
Overview

Electrical Systems Design Engineer — Full-time, Hybrid

Derby / Bristol / Solihull. An exciting opportunity to join a growing team on a technology development and demonstrator programme for a more-electric power and propulsion platform in advance of a New Product Introduction programme. Projects include concept architecture studies, electrical system design, modelling, simulation, prototype development and full-scale product demonstrators. Power levels range from a few kW up to several MW with voltage levels up to ~5 kV. This is an ideal opportunity to help develop cutting-edge electrical technology for a wide range of aerospace applications.

In the role of Electrical Systems Engineer, you will analyse, develop, and demonstrate new electrical power system technologies for customers across our business sectors. You will contribute to the company\'s electrical systems technology strategy and coordinate research activities through our Electrical Technology Partners in the UK and globally. You will work with internal supply chain units to assist with the development of our future electrical commodities supply chain.

Why Rolls-Royce?

Rolls-Royce is a leading brand at the forefront of innovation. We design, build and service systems that provide critical power to customers where safety and reliability are paramount. We are committed to progress, powering, protecting and connecting people, and we seek people to join us on this journey.

What we offer

We offer development opportunities, a competitive salary, and exceptional benefits including bonus, employee support assistance and employee discounts. We encourage flexible working arrangements and hybrid working wherever possible.

What you will be doing
  • Strategy: Identify, develop, and implement innovative technology solutions in power generation and distribution. Develop clear product specifications and performance requirements with input from mechanical, electrical and systems teams, as well as partners and suppliers as appropriate.

  • Project Definition: Lead the definition of electrical projects, capturing requirements, creating proposals, obtaining stakeholder approval, securing funding, and aligning partner support.

  • Problem Solving: Lead resolution of new and emerging technical, compliance and business problems using analytical processes and professional judgement.

  • Collaboration: Access internal and external networks of specialists to advance understanding and support strategic collaborative relationships.

  • Leadership: Provide technical direction to peers and junior professionals, and technical leadership to teams and projects within the specialism.

  • People Capability: Define skill requirements, identify and deliver training, support development of others, and provide mentoring.

  • Standards Definition: Ensure policies, standards and best practices are defined, shared and adopted.

  • Knowledge Sharing: Lead sharing of best practice and represent the area as an authority in the defined subject; record decisions and salient information in reports and systems.

Who we’re looking for
  • Professionally qualified Engineer (UK minimum BEng or equivalent; higher degree preferred) with a background in electrical systems.

  • Experience in writing technical documents such as hardware requirements and specifications, product design specifications, test specifications, schematic and board-level design details.

  • Experience in developing, implementing and validating electrical power systems and sub-systems that integrate electrical machines, AC-AC / AC-DC and DC-DC conversion stages that connect to a grid and/or other loads via a distribution system.

  • An awareness of analyses required to support electrical system architecture definition (e.g., Electrical Load Analysis, Fault Tree Analysis) and understanding of architecture impact on components and adjacent systems.

  • A systems-thinking mindset and understanding of systems engineering processes, tools and industry standards (ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288, ARP4754; MBSE experience preferred).

  • An awareness of safety and reliability methods as applied to novel systems concepts (e.g., FHA, DFMEA, HAZOP) is preferred.

To work on Defence projects, you will need to be UK-based, have the right to work in the UK, not be a US national, and have been cleared through the company\'s BPSS checks (Baseline Personnel Security Standard). Rolls-Royce will support the BPSS application if you do not already have it in place.

We are an equal opportunities employer committed to a diverse and inclusive workforce. We believe diverse perspectives drive innovation and problem solving. By building a culture of caring and belonging, we give everyone the opportunity to realise their full potential.
