Job description
Overview

Salisbury NHS Foundation Trust is offering a part-time post (6 PAs per week) for a Consultant Ophthalmologist with a subspecialty interest in Cornea and Anterior Segment Surgery. The successful candidate will join a dynamic department, develop their corneal subspecialty, contribute to the adult cataract service, and support the growth of a leading consultant team. The post-holder will inherit a mature corneal service with no significant waiting lists and will have opportunities for research time if desired.

Interviews for this position will be held 20 November 2025.

Responsibilities
  • Provide expert clinical care in cornea and anterior segment surgery, managing both outpatient and surgical services.
  • Inherit and lead a well-established corneal service with no significant waiting list, shaping service delivery and implementing positive changes.
  • Collaborate with a dedicated team, including a Specialist Optometrist in the External Eye Clinic and a Specialist Contact Lens Optometrist.
  • Contribute to the Trust-wide adult cataract surgery service and general ophthalmology care.
  • Participate in the consultant on-call rota (proportional to part-time commitment).
  • Engage in departmental audit, clinical governance, and service improvement projects.
  • Teach and supervise junior doctors, allied professionals, and medical students.
  • Support the development of the consultant team and foster a high-performing, collaborative culture.
  • If desired, pursue research interests, supported by the Trust\'s research portfolio and links with the University of Southampton; dedicated research time can be included in the job plan.
Qualifications and Experience
  • Possession, or within 6 months of possession, of a CCT in ophthalmology leading to entry onto the GMC Specialist Register.
  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practice.
  • Evidence of wide experience and a high level of competence in ophthalmology.
Management and Teaching
  • Ability to contribute to service development and to manage/prioritise time and information effectively.
  • Ability to work within the Trust and NHS performance targets; balance individual and departmental needs.
  • Demonstrated clinical leadership and commitment to clinical governance.
  • Interest in teaching and educational supervision; ability to teach trainees and inspire others; involvement in clinical audit and critical appraisal of research.
