The main purpose of this post is to support the Directorate of Surgery and the Trust in maintaining the delivery of a high-quality service, ensuring the patients of North Warwickshire have access to Oncoplastic Breast Surgery in a timely manner.

The prospective candidate will be part of the breast care unit team consisting of two consultants and one Specialty Doctor.

We are ably supported by Radiologists and oncologists from UHCW (we are part of Coventry and Warwickshire Breast screening unit). We have a workload of 170 breast cancers in a year. We have excellent co-operation from Plastic surgeons from our local tertiary centre and neighbouring trust (UHCW) for complex reconstructions. Clinical commitments will include provision of new patient assessment clinics, one stops, results clinics, follow up clinics, MDT and theatre.

Main duties of the job

• This post will provide a comprehensive breast surgical service. Oncoplastic breast surgical experience is essential. You will provide outpatient clinics (new patient, results and specialist oncoplastic clinics) and undertake elective surgical lists in breast surgery. a potential for increasing operating sessions to include Saturdays in the future.
• Post operative care of patients is coordinated via the Breast Surgery Team, ensuring that appropriate management and care is provided to all patients under the Breast Surgery Specialty.
• Out of Hours on call service is provided by the general surgery on call rota. A Surgical Assessment Unit is available 7 days per week for emergency access for patients.

Clinical Duties

• Diagnosis and treatment of patients, continuing clinical responsibility for the patients in your charge, allowing for all proper delegation and training of your staff.
• Diagnosis and treatment of patients occupying accommodation made available under section 58, 65, and 66 of the National Health Act 1977, in so far as such patients have not made private arrangements for such treatment under section 65(2) of the Act.

Job responsibilities

You will be expected to work with local managers and professional colleagues in the efficient running of services. Subject to the conditions of the Terms and Conditions of Service, you are expected to observe the Trusts agreed policies and procedures, drawn up in consultation with the profession on clinical matters, and to follow the standing orders and financial instructions of the Trust

In particular, where you manage employees of the Trust, you will be expected to follow the local and national employment and personnel policies and procedures. You will be expected to make sure that there are adequate arrangements for hospital staff involved in the care of your patients to be able to contact you when necessary. You have responsibility for the work and supervision of junior medical staff who work with you, and you will devote time to this activity on a regular basis. If appropriate, you will be named in the contracts of doctors in training grades as the person responsible for overseeing their training and as the initial source of advice to such doctors on their careers.

It is a requirement of the post that post-holders comply with Trust policies and procedures, have (and maintain) GMC registration / licensing and participate in a formal CPD programme (The Trust supports the requirements for Continuing Medical Education and is committed to providing time and financial support for these activities). Appraisal and Revalidation The post-holders must also participate in job planning, regular medical audit and in annual appraisal with one of the trained appraisers within the Trust. Job planning will take place on an annual basis, and it is the responsibility of the clinical director and directorate manager to ensure that job planning takes place.

Clinical governance

To have responsibility for a commitment to maintaining a high-quality service to patients by continual development of practice in the light of research evidence and by audit based against clinically relevant standards. In addition, individual staff have a major role in suggesting and implementing improvement to services and in exercising professional responsibility for both themselves and their peers within an open no blame culture.

Managerial Duties

Opportunities for higher managerial roles within Breast Surgery may be available to an interested candidate. Any new consultant appointee would be eligible to apply for the position of Clinical Lead for Breast Surgery in turn with their colleagues as required. Work with colleagues to manage the daily business of the Directorate and to develop the service in accordance with the Trusts strategic direction. Taking part in meetings and other activities as agreed with the Clinical Directorate.

You will operate value for money measures within the constraints of the departmental budget ensuring quality and patient care is not compromised. Teaching Duties You will take responsibility for the work and supervision and management of trainees. If appropriate, you will be named in the contracts of doctors in training grades as the person responsible for overseeing their training and as the initial source of advice to such doctors on their careers. You will contribute to the formal teaching programme of junior staff both within the specialty and the hospital as a whole, to the teaching programme.

Experience and Knowledge

• Ability to offer expert opinion in a range of problems covering elective and emergency problems within the specialty

• Ability to organize and manage outpatient priorities, surgical waiting lists and operating lists
• Ability to manage and lead a team
• Clinical training and experience to that required for gaining UK CCST in Breast Surgery

Qualifications and Professional Training

• FRCS or equivalent
• Full GMC registration
• Entry onto the GMC Specialist Register
• Member of the Royal College of Surgeons
• Eligible to work in the UK
• CCT (or CESR) in General Surgery
