Job description
Overview

Applications are invited for a full time Consultant in Sedation and Special Care Dentistry to work across the University Dental Hospital, and University Hospital Llandough within the Cardiff and Vale University Health Board. This post offers a rare opportunity to shape the strategy for adult special care dental services across primary and secondary care, and to develop a 'Community of Practice' around Special Care Dentistry within the health board area.

Cardiff and Vale University Health Board is recognised as a teaching centre of excellence in a wide range of clinical services.

Applicants must be on the General Dental Council Specialist list in Special Care Dentistry or within 6 months of completion of specialty training in Special Care Dentistry.

Main duties of the job

The successful applicant will be expected to collaborate with advice to Cardiff University to help provide high quality education to undergraduates in the areas of Sedation and Special Care Dentistry. The University Hospital of Wales is a regional and national centre for a number of medical specialties and this role will include opportunities to support the development of networks where medicine and dentistry interface.

Qualifications and Training

Essential

  • Full Registration with the General Dental Council
  • On Specialist Register for Special Care Dentistry or be eligible within six months of interview date
  • Higher-level (postgraduate) qualification in Sedation and/or Special Care Dentistry (at Postgraduate Certificate level or above), or equivalent experience.

Desirable

  • MFDS/ MJDF
  • Evidence of training/ a postgraduate qualification in education/ dental education
  • Postgraduate Research Degree
  • Completion of a recognised 3-year specialist training programme in Special Care Dentistry.

Experience

  • Current experience with conscious sedation including transmucosal techniques.
  • Ability to demonstrate clinical procedures at a specialist level, with an emphasis on Sedation and Special Care Dentistry
  • Evidence of up to date ILS training
  • Representation on national and UK sedation and/or special care dentistry groups
  • Demonstrable experience of service development and managing change

Desirable

  • Evidence of developing sedation and/or special care dentistry guidance and standards
  • Demonstrable knowledge of Value-based Healthcare
  • Experience of teaching at undergraduate and/or postgraduate level
  • Demonstrable leadership in conscious sedation and/or special care dentistry at national level.

Clinical Governance

  • Essential: Evidence of participation in clinical audit and understanding role of audit in improving clinical practice.
  • Understanding of clinical risk management and clinical governance management
  • Evidence of proactive engagement with appraisal and revalidation

Research

  • Essential: Ability to critically appraise research
  • Active Research Interests
