A renowned NHS Trust in Bury St Edmunds is seeking a full-time Consultant Breast Radiologist. The successful candidate will maintain high clinical standards and participate in breast screening, training, and governance activities. This role provides an opportunity to work with a comprehensive team of radiologists and specialists in a supportive environment. The Trust is committed to providing high-quality care to the community and promoting an inclusive workplace culture.
Breast imaging is separate from the main imaging department in a dedicated single‑site breast unit within the West Suffolk Hospital site, co‑located with the breast surgical team, breast care nurses and support staff. We provide the breast symptomatic service and the NHS Breast Screening Programme to West Suffolk.
There are two mobile vans where most of the screening is performed.
The static department benefits from 3 mammography units, a mixture of Hologic and GE. Tomosynthesis, tomo‑guided vacuum biopsy and excision and Ultrasound guided vacuum excision are performed. Contrast mammography is available on equipment and implementation planned. There are two ultrasound rooms (Siemens and Canon). MRI breast (GE) is performed and reported on site, using Terarecon software, MRI biopsy is outsourced via agreed pathway.
The main X‑Ray department is located in the centre of the ground floor of the hospital and is ideally placed to offer a diagnostic imaging service. The main X‑Ray department comprises four X‑Ray rooms, a fluoroscopy room and an Interventional Radiology room. There is one purpose‑built X‑Ray room in the A&E Department. The department uses the PACS system Agfa Enterprise Imaging. All the images are available on the PACS system. This is integrated with a voice recognition system and nearly all reporting is now undertaken with voice recognition. There are satellite X‑Ray departments at Thetford, Botesdale and Sudbury.
CDC – The Trust's new Community Diagnostic Centre in Newmarket opened in January 2025 and hosts 2 X‑Ray rooms, 3 Ultrasound rooms, a CT scanner and an MRI scanner, alongside cardiology and lung function services.
In the main X‑Ray department are two ultrasound rooms providing inpatient and outpatient services; DVT, MSK, head and neck scanning. The Ultrasound service is well supported by Imaging Assistants and nursing staff.
CT – There are three GE 64‑slice CT scanners on the West Suffolk Hospital site; 2 in the main department and a third "CT in a box" located at the back of the hospital next to the Education Centre. The fourth CT scanner is located at the CDC. There are teleradiology links to the consultants' homes for viewing all imaging modalities when on‑call. Overnight CTs are reported by an off‑site reporting company from 8 pm.
MRI – This department, near the rear entrance, is fitted with 2 Siemens 1.5T MRI scanners. The third MRI scanner is located at the CDC.
