Job description
Commercial Accountant

I'm delighted to be partnering exclusively with a well-established and growing engineering business based in North Essex, who are looking to appoint a Commercial Accountant to their growing team. This is a fantastic opportunity for a qualified accountant who enjoys combining hands‑on management accounting with genuine commercial involvement across projects and operations.

This position plays a key part in driving financial performance and providing the business with accurate, insightful reporting. You'll take ownership of month‑end close, management accounts, and project‑level analysis, while working closely with operational leaders to support decision‑making, pricing, and margin improvement.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver month‑end close, contract revenue recognition, and full management accounts with variance analysis.
  • Partner with management to provide insight on pricing, project performance, and profitability.
  • Prepare and maintain cashflow forecasts, ensuring robust cash utilisation planning.
  • Produce accurate cashflows, KPIs, and project dashboards.
  • Manage project budgets, labour recovery rates, and cost allocations.
  • Lead budget and reforecast processes; deliver ROI analysis and post‑completion reviews.
  • Review supplier and subcontractor invoices for correct coding and compliance with VAT and CIS.
  • Support process improvements and automation within financial systems and reporting.
The Candidate

We're looking for a qualified accountant (ACA / ACCA / CIMA) with at least 3 years' management accounting experience, ideally gained within a construction, engineering, or project‑based environment.

You should be confident working across both finance and operations, able to interpret financial data and present it clearly to non‑finance stakeholders. Strong Excel and analytical skills are essential, along with experience in WIP, job costing, and project reporting.

This role will suit someone commercially minded, proactive, and keen to add value beyond the numbers.

The Offer
  • Competitive salary (dependent on experience)
  • Opportunity to influence business performance and profitability
  • Exposure to a wide range of commercial and operational activity
  • Supportive, growing environment within a successful engineering company
