Job description

We are seeking enthusiastic, flexible, and motivated people to join our team in a new hybrid role, delivering specialist training & education to CCRT responders/SOR Teams & support to our specialist operational response. This unique opportunity blends the responsibilities of a Civil Contingencies Response Team (CCRT) Instructor and SORT Paramedic.

As a CCRT Instructor, you will deliver specialist education and training to learners from across the Scottish Ambulance Service throughout Scotland, SOR Teams, the wider NHS and partner organisations. The role includes support to operational response in a command capacity when required.

As a SORT Paramedic, you are trained to provide specialist paramedic care in high-risk environments. You work as part of a multi-disciplined team providing advanced patient care in challenging and dynamic conditions.

This hybrid role involves shift working, including unsocial hours, and requires flexibility with rota changes. Regular travel is also required as part of the post.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deliver the CCRT education programme, providing structured theoretical and practical training to frontline clinical staff, SORT teams and wider NHS partners.
  • Develop, deliver and evaluate specialist training in clinical decontamination, CBRNe and HazMat response, and other disciplines required for the CCRT role
  • Support multi‑agency training and operational readiness activities, contributing to effective response during major incidents and specialist operations.
  • Provide advanced clinical care in challenging and high-risk environments.
  • Operate in hazardous conditions: CBRN, MTA, confined spaces, water ops, unstable terrain, safe working at height.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date specialist knowledge, technical competence and fitness standards required for CCRT training delivery and SORT operational deployment.

The Person

  • HCPC registered as Paramedic with minimum 2 years’ frontline experience.
  • Essential: Training and experience ideally with professional teaching qualifications.
  • Evidence of a consistent commitment to supporting training, education and mentoring within the Scottish Ambulance Service, demonstrating active contribution to developing staff capability and strengthening the service’s wider operational and training standards.
  • Qualified in SORT/HART or CBRN/HAZMAT environments preferred.
  • Successful completion and maintenance of all specialist courses relevant to CCRT Instructor position and SORT Paramedic.
  • Must meet physical standards (height: 160–200cm; weight: ≤130kg).
  • Security Check (SC) clearance required.

Application and Selection

  • Shortlisted candidates must pass the SORT Paramedic Physical Competency Assessment (PCA), Clinical OSCE, command task and swim test.
  • Applicants who successfully pass the PCA will deliver a presentation and attend a formal interview.
  • Additional security vetting will be required due to the sensitive nature of the role if not already held.
