Job description
Overview

The Advanced Clinical Practitioner (ACP) role in Emergency and Same Day Emergency Care is an advanced, autonomous position that transcends traditional professional boundaries, providing expert clinical assessment and management of patients across the emergency pathway. Working within the Emergency Department (ED), Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), and associated urgent care settings, the ACP is a key leader in inter-professional practice, modelling excellence in the delivery of safe, effective, and holistic care.

Please see attached 'ACP Recruitment Pack' for further information.

Responsibilities
  • Report to the Senior Matron for line management, with clinical oversight provided by an Emergency Medicine Consultant.
  • Receive educational supervision from an Emergency Medicine Consultant, similar to a core medical trainee, to support professional development and the effective delivery of the ACP service.
  • Undertake independent assessment, diagnosis, and management of patients with undifferentiated and complex presentations, in line with the Royal College of Emergency Medicine curriculum (2015), under appropriate supervision regardless of credentialed status.
  • Contribute to the middle-grade rota, once competencies are achieved, and actively engage in departmental teaching and education.
  • Collaborate effectively within multi-professional teams, working alongside consultants, nursing, allied health professionals, and site-specific clinical specialists to deliver patient-centred care.
  • Participate in, and where appropriate lead, clinical audit, service evaluation, and research projects to inform practice, support service innovation, and improve outcomes for patients and families.
  • Uphold and promote Clinical Governance standards, supporting directorate governance processes and contributing to continuous quality improvement.
Context

The organisation and the Emergency Department Leadership are keen to grow an Advanced Clinical Practitioner workforce. The ED is a busy environment with opportunities to extend medical knowledge, including a specialist centre for renal and transplant medicine. We have expanded how we deliver emergency care and are growing our Acute SDEC capacity managed and delivered by the ED team.
