Job description

We are the world's largest university press. That means we serve the academic community as no other publisher can. We work in partnership with institutions and learned societies to bring a world of knowledge to the fingertips of students and researchers worldwide.

The goal is impact. Together with our academic communities, we curate and seamlessly connect together the ideas that push their fields forward, so they can learn from them, add to them, and continue a virtuous cycle of scholarship.

And because we are a part of the academic community and guided in everything we do by our mission, we re-invest in our people, our publishing, and the world-leading research institution of which we are part.

About the Role

The Associate Managing Editor will be responsible for maintaining an efficient and ethical peer review process for the high-impact, broad-scope open access journal PNAS Nexus. PNAS Nexus is the sibling journal to the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences (PNAS) and is published by OUP on behalf of the National Academy of Sciences (NAS). Under the guidance of the NAS Managing Editor, you will uphold editorial office best practice and ensure that journal articles are published in a smooth and timely manner and to the highest standard. You will also provide excellent operational support and customer service for the journal's editors and authors.

Duties will include:

  • Oversee the editorial process for PNAS Nexus manuscripts, ensuring smooth progression from submission to production.
  • Monitor journal inboxes and submission systems, responding to queries promptly and maintaining accurate records.
  • Support ethical investigations in collaboration with the NAS Managing Editor and OUP staff, following COPE guidelines.
  • Assist editors by inviting and tracking referees, sending reminders, and ensuring timely reviews.
  • Work with the NAS Managing Editor to refine submission systems, ensuring editors are trained and updates are implemented effectively.
  • Troubleshoot and enhance editorial workflows and policies to improve user experience and efficiency.
  • Maintain and update Standard Operating Procedures, including training materials for staff and editors.
  • Liaise with OUP production teams and suppliers to ensure seamless communication and journal operations.
  • Compile and present data for editorial board meetings while assisting with special projects.
  • Prepare reports on submission volume, acceptance rates, and KPIs, tracking editorial performance and stakeholder communications.

We operate a hybrid working policy that requires a minimum of 2 days per week in the Oxford office.

About You
  • Keen eye for detail and ability to follow processes and workflows with a high degree of accuracy.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and prioritization skills.
  • Ability to solve problems of variety and complexity using originality and ingenuity.
  • Ability to serve as a resource to editors and authors in the resolution of complex problems and issues.
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Prior experience utilizing online submission systems, especially eJournalPress (EJP), preferred.
  • Prior experience working in scientific publishing or in a related industry preferred.
Benefits

We care about work/life balance here at OUP. With this in mind we offer 25 days' holiday that rises with service, plus bank holidays and Christmas closure (3-days) and a 35-hour working week. We are open to discussing flexibility in respect to working patterns, dependent on role. We also have a great variety of active employee networks and societies.

We help make your money go further by contributing to your pension up to 12%, offering loans and savings schemes through our partnership with Salary Finance, in addition to travel to work schemes and access to a wide range of local discounts.

This role comes with the added benefit of a discretionary annual payment.
