IPVF – Photovoltaic Institute of Île-de-France

The Île-de-France Photovoltaic Institute, an institute for energy transition created in 2013, is a scientific and technical center dedicated to the research and development of solar technologies. On its site located in Paris-Saclay, it brings together its own staff, employees of its partners and those of external companies. The IPVF aims to ambition to become one of the main global centers for research, innovation and training in the field of energy transition.

The IPVF aims to primary objective of improving the performance and competitiveness of photovoltaic cells and developing disruptive technologies relying on four levers:

  • An ambitious research program
  • The reception, on its Paris-Saclay site, of more than 200 researchers and their laboratories
  • A state-of-the-art technological platform (8,000 m²) open to players in the photovoltaic sector, and bringing together more than 100 cutting-edge pieces of equipment located in clean rooms
  • A training program mainly based on a master's degree, supervision of doctoral students, and continuing education
INTERNSHIP CONTEXT

Ecodesign is a product evaluation method that identifies critical elements for its environmental impact. In the case of photovoltaics in France, studies have defined criteria to consider for silicon (Si)-based modules. However, this internship aims to propose a broader definition to include emerging perovskite (PVK)-based technologies entering the market and to apply it to Si/PVK and PVK/PVK tandem modules. Furthermore, it is necessary to apply this methodology quantitatively, incorporating the state of the art in recyclability, recent advances in photovoltaic research, and techno-economic considerations related to already identified environmental improvements.

The intern will work closely with the technical-economic and environmental analysis team as well as with the IPVF PVK and Tandem module manufacturing team.

MAIN MISSIONS
  • Systematic literature review: collect data from LCA studies, European reports, standards and ecodesign guides for Si and emerging modules (perovskite, tandems).
  • Definition of critical parameters: establish a list (critical materials, embodied energy, durability of materials (encapsulants, frame), performance losses, recycling potential, toxicity, etc.).
  • Quantification: propose measurable indicators (e.g., kg CO₂-eq/kWp, reuse rate, % of recyclable materials, cost per tonne recycled) and identify data sources. Adaptation to perovskites/tandems: estimate and model missing parameters (lifespan, functional layers, deposition processes) based on the state of the art.
  • Techno-economic integration: cost/benefit analysis of improvements (potential additional cost of eco-design, recycling costs vs. impact reduction, recovery scenarios / circular economy).
  • Synthesis and recommendations: matrix of eco-design criteria specific to tandem Si/PVK and PVK/PVK modules, comparison with relevant bibliographic studies and proposals for experimental tests or complementary LCA studies.
REQUIRED PROFILE

Training : specialized master 2 providing knowledge in LCA (life cycle analysis) and techno-economic analyses.

There’s nothing quite like an experience (Internship or project) in materials science and energy performance evaluation is essential. Users must be proficient in using Simapro. The working languages are English (required) and French (recommended).
