Offer Description

The fellow will be responsible for conducting thermal transport measurements over a wide temperature range across various insulating compounds, from magnetic materials to quantum paraelectric substances.

The primary goal is to identify the microscopic mechanisms that control the magnitude of thermal conductivity and explore potential ways to modify it using either magnetic or electric fields. These thermal transport measurements will be performed alongside neutron scattering experiments, which will provide crucial microscopic parameters. The fellow will use these parameters to analyze and interpret the thermal conductivity data, leading to a comprehensive understanding of the materials' thermal conductivity properties.

Responsibilities
  • Design and development of thermal transport setup
  • Sample preparation and mounting
  • Conducting low-noise experiments at cryogenic temperatures in various environments (e.g., PPMS, dilution fridge)
  • Data analysis for both electrical and thermal transport measurements
  • Development of microscopic models and fitting of thermal transport data
  • This work is part of the ANR-funded MELODY project, which seeks to develop a novel engineering approach that combines local chemical disorder and magneto-elastic coupling to reduce thermal conductivity in magnetic solids.
  • The MELODY project integrates three key experimental techniques (sample growth, thermal conductivity measurements, and neutron scattering) alongside one computational method (first-principles calculations). The fellow will have the opportunity to collaborate with all members of the consortium throughout the project.
Qualifications
  • Strong motivation to conduct transport measurement experiments
  • Solid background in solid-state physics
  • Expertise in low-temperature transport measurements; experience in thermal transport measurements is desirable but not mandatory
  • Excellent communication and computing (Python, Labview) skills
  • Fluency in both spoken and written English is required
