Overview
The Deputy Sheriff performs first-level law enforcement duties including protection of life and property, enforcement of laws and ordinances, maintenance of order, and crime investigation for the Spokane County Sheriff's Office (Agency). This position is generally under supervision of a patrol corporal and/or sergeant, but may work independently at times. Incumbents will work varying hours and shifts.
Employees of the Spokane County Sheriff's Office hold positions of high public trust. All employees must conduct themselves, both on and off duty, in a manner that does not bring disrepute upon the Agency or the professional image of law enforcement.
Total compensation: $92,651 - $134,744 annually. Starting pay is $34.80 per hour on the pay scale and paid according to the Spokane County Deputy Sheriff\'s Association (DSA) Collective Bargaining Agreement, determined by total years of service as a commissioned law enforcement officer.
NOTE: Do not apply for this position unless you have completed the initial testing through Public Safety Testing (PST). All applicants must take the initial Written Exam and Washington State Physical Ability Test (PAT) through PST before submitting a Spokane County application. Scores are not sent to the agency until you have passed both Written and PAT through PST.
Responsibilities
- Patrol a designated area of Spokane County in a patrol car, on a bicycle, boat, and/or on foot to deter and discover crime, conduct on-scene investigations, aid persons in trouble, and provide public services as needed.
- Enforce traffic and parking ordinances; investigate accidents; operate a radar unit; issue citations; serve warrants; arrest suspects; complete reports on crimes, arrests, evidence, and witness interactions.
- Serve civil processes; conduct address checks on registered sex offenders; document attempts and other pertinent information.
- Respond to reports of possible crime, secure scenes, interview victims, witnesses, and suspects; gather evidence; locate and arrest suspects; interview and gather information; locate and secure evidence for investigations; prepare cases for prosecution.
- Report to accident scenes; provide first aid and summon aid; draw accident sketches; complete standard accident reports; make arrests as warranted.
- Provide information to the public regarding laws and ordinances.
- Develop community contacts to obtain information about crimes and issues affecting assigned district; promote the community policing philosophy.
- Complete additional investigations as required by prosecution; testify in court as needed.
- Respond to potentially violent events and use force if necessary; perform specialized duties as assigned; assist with on-the-job training and education of peers and external agencies as appropriate.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Must be a U.S. citizen, lawful permanent resident, or DACA recipient; must speak, read, and write English; high school diploma or GED.
- Minimum age 21 at appointment (may test at 20 if turning 21 during the eligibility period).
- Meet one of the following: 60 semester credits/90 quarter credits; an Associate\'s degree or higher; or two years of equivalent full-time work experience (military experience eligible).
- Driver\'s license required at application and throughout employment.
Working Conditions
- 24/7 operation with varied day/night shifts, weekends, holidays, and overtime as required.
- Various weather conditions and schedules (8, 10, 12-hour shifts).
- Possibility of emergencies requiring physical effort; exposure to hazardous conditions and potentially infectious materials; potential use of force.
- Must be in good health and able to perform required duties with or without corrective devices.

Additional Information
Incentives include Education Incentive: AA/AS 3.5%, Bachelor’s 7%, Master’s 9%. Residency is not required to live within Spokane County.
