The newly created Senior Representative for European Economic Coordination department combines the existing administrative duties of the Head of the Paris Office with a new mandate to deepen the World Bank Group’s relations with various European stakeholders. This includes representation and engagement with the European Commission and bilateral governments at senior level, outreach to international organizations based in Europe (such as other MDBs, OECD, IEA, NATO, ICC etc.) as well as think tanks and universities. The Senior Representative coordinates closely with ECR and with the ECA Vice Presidency in the exercise of its functions.
In addition to its administrative and representational roles, the Senior Representative office will have a focused analytical work program, in collaboration with other WBG units and in partnership with European think tanks, to position the WBG as a thought leader on key issues of common interest. Examples could include developing and operationalizing a new policy on labor migration through global skills partnerships; developing proposals on how to utilize the envisaged 1.5% of GDP in funding for strengthening Europe’s “resilience” in the face of growing security risks; or addressing other areas where Europe’s experience offers valuable lessons for other countries and regions (ageing, digital governance, reforms of the welfare state, etc.).
