HEABC leads and supports the strategic planning related to human resources and labour relations on behalf of British Columbia’s publicly funded health employers. HEABC is responsible for negotiating provincial agreements for 138,000 unionized health care employees including nurses, physician residents, ambulance paramedics, health science professionals, and more.

OPPORTUNITY:

HEABC has an opening for two newly created Legal Counsel/ Labour Relations Consultant positions. Reporting to the Team Lead, Affiliates, the Legal Counsel/ Labour Relations Consultant performs a broad range of legal and consulting services including:

  • Acting as counsel in a variety of arbitral hearing forums on cases that have high value and/or an industry impact.
  • Providing legal advice relating to a comprehensive range of policy and legal issues.
  • Acting as a resource to collective bargaining teams and/ or participating in collective bargaining.
  • Identifying areas for strategic litigation and member education.

Ideally, you have experience with court applications and labour relations board work.

Responsibilities include:

  • Establish, maintain, and foster effective working relationships with member organizations, health sector unions and outside agencies.
  • Represent members and/or HEABC in a variety of labour relations dispute resolution forums.
  • Conduct legal research including analysis of case law, bargaining information, legislation, and policy.
  • Participate in or assist with health sector collective bargaining.
  • Provide input to educational materials for members and delivers labour relations/legal seminars.
  • Prepare bulletins and legal updates for members to provide critical time-sensitive advice to HEABC membership.

Required Experience & Knowledge:

  • A degree in Law and current member in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia or a bachelor’s degree in industrial relations, business or a related discipline from an accredited University.
  • A minimum of seven (7) years’ recent, related experience, preferably in labour and employment law, labour relations or human resources within a complex labour relations environment.
  • Expertise in research, evaluation and interpretation of legal issues.
  • Knowledge of health sector labour relations, related legislation, collective agreements and jurisprudence.
  • Knowledge and expertise in legal research, evaluation, and interpretation of legal issues.
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing with strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent strategic, analytical and problem-solving skills; a team player with strong interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to organize, plan and execute work within demanding work schedules.

Salary Range:$88,990 to $152,413

Typical Hiring Range: $88,990 to $132,533

In determining salary, HEABC considers many factors including the successful candidate’s skillset and experience as well as internal equity. The final salary offer will be at HEABC’s sole discretion and presented as part of a competitive total compensation package.
