This position is contingent upon your ability to obtain and maintain a Canadian Security Clearance (Reliability / Controlled Goods or higher).

As a Senior Welding Technologist, you will engage with design/engineering and production teams to establish welding techniques and practices for executing welding work in a Shipyard. The programs may involve new vessel construction, refits, and in-service support of marine platforms such as ships and submarines.

You will participate in performing design integration, coordinating inputs from naval architectural and other engineering disciplines, such as marine engineering and structures, into balanced, closed solution designs to establish principal characteristics and design features such as length, beam, depth, draft, displacement, speed, and other performance parameters.

In this role, you will:

• Apply metallurgical principles to determine how metal properties react to one another, establish safe metal combinations, and identify appropriate welding techniques and positions for welding and metal fabrication.
• Provide advice to engineering teams on all aspects related to welding.
• Ensure health, safety, and environmental considerations are prioritized in all activities.
• Understand relevant welding codes to identify processes and materials that ensure high-quality components meeting specified standards.
• In an office environment, your responsibilities will include reviewing welding project specifications, recommending welding materials, developing welding procedure specifications, and creating welding procedure data sheets.
• Perform inspections both inside and outside ships and submarines during refits, which may involve working on scaffolding, in confined spaces, climbing ladders, and exposure to welding fumes.

To succeed in this role, you will have:

• College or technical training with a minimum of 12 years' experience interpreting engineering drawings, including welding symbols, and working with welding codes and standards (e.g., ASME, CSA, ISO, AWS).
• Eligibility to obtain a Reliability Level Clearance prior to employment (Canadian Citizenship or Permanent Resident Status required).
• Eligibility for Level 1 CSA W178.0 Welding Inspector certification.
• Valid NDT certificate.
• Experience with ship construction, refits, repairs, and site shutdowns.
• Demonstrated continuing education courses.
• Willingness to travel up to 10%.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

• Metallurgy and welding of various metals (e.g., copper, aluminum, cast iron, stainless steel).
• Understanding of layout spaces and relationships.
• Knowledge of MSDS, welding specifications, and types of welding rods and fluxes.
• Ability to read blueprints and drawings, use office equipment, and apply layout/fit-up principles.
• Familiarity with applicable welding standards and conducting vessel inspections, including climbing ladders and scaffolding.

Additional Desired Skills and Experience:

• Completion of a formal four-year apprenticeship (asset).
• CSA W47.1/2 Welding Supervisor certification.
• Experience in welding quality control or assurance roles.
• Qualified welder (preferably with red seal accreditation).
• Knowledge of submarine operations, design, and systems (asset).
• Understanding of typical marine vessel defects and material behavior under environmental conditions.
• Experience in marine industry, oil and gas, defense, or heavy engineering sectors (asset).
