• The primary duties include the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of a Waste Transfer Station and associated equipment.
• Monitor incoming waste loads, maintain the tipping floor, and clean/remediate contamination from recycling materials.
• Operate controls for hydraulic compactors to load transfer trailers; assist in hooking up and unhooking transfer trailers from compactors.
• Clean up waste spills after removing transfer trailers from the compactor hooks; clean off loaded trailers and secure heavy trailer doors.
• Communicate with staff regarding waste types and maximum weight requirements; communicate with transfer station customers.
• Direct vehicular traffic in tipping areas, act as a signal person around the site, and validate Dump Authorization Tickets (DATs) for authenticity.
• Report to Supervisor on unacceptable materials being dumped and report all incidents and/or safety concerns on the tipping floor.
• Assist with minor preventive maintenance duties, such as greasing and oiling, as directed.
• Perform general site cleanliness duties.

Your application must describe your qualifications as they relate to:

• Must be physically capable of performing duties such as opening/closing heavy trailer doors, hooking up trailers to compactors, cranking landing gears on transfer trailers, standing for long periods, and directing traffic with arms/hands.
• Must be alert and aware of surroundings at all times.
• Must be able to work outdoors in varying climatic conditions and tolerate noisy, dusty and odorous conditions.
• Must be available to work shifts (days, afternoons, midnights); work weekends/overtime/on-call duty and in emergency situations.
• Must be able to wear prescribed safety Personal Protective Equipment (hard hats, safety footwear, respirators, and hearing protection).
• Must be able to communicate and deal effectively with private and municipal truck drivers hauling waste to transfer stations and with customers in a professional and effective manner.

You must also have:

• Ability to use good judgment in emergencies, such as fires and accidents.
• Ability to maintain accurate records and communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
• Must have the ability to operate hydraulic compactors.
• Must be familiar with the Occupational Health and Safety Act and the regulations that apply to this work (e.g., Transfer Station Site Regulations).
