Metroland is participating in Canada’s 'Local Journalism Initiative', which promotes local journalism in underserved communities across Canada.

The Almaguin News seeks an energetic reporter with a journalism degree or equivalent for a unique opportunity.

During this temporary full-time contract ending September 30, 2025, you will produce 5-7 stories weekly for online publication at www.northbaynipissing.com. Your work may also appear in other Metroland outlets and be shared via the LJI portal.

The position is remote, but you must be available for interviews and photography in the region.

Your salary, paid through a government grant, ranges from $37,850.13 to $56,829.84.

The successful candidate will focus on community issues affecting the region and civic institutions.

• Report on municipal and community issues
• Take quality photographs for publication
• Generate engaging story ideas
• Adhere to Canadian Libel Law and Canadian Press Style
• Create local news stories in traditional and innovative formats
• Produce trustworthy journalism with strong reporting and research skills, including data analysis
• Develop multi-media content
• Travel within the community, including evenings and weekends, for coverage

• Minimum one year newsroom experience
• Strong interviewing, social media, and writing skills
• Good news judgment and work ethic
• Photography skills
• Ability to work remotely
• Flexibility to work evenings and weekends
• Access to a vehicle and valid driver’s license
• Excellent communication skills, especially in Canadian Press Style
• Strong organizational and time management skills
• Ability to work under tight deadlines in a fast-paced environment
• Team-oriented with professional relationship-building skills
