Job description

Maxwell Management Group Ltd. is proud to partner with The WestCoast Native Health Care Society (Tsawaayuus Rainbow Gardens) in search of a Director of Care to join their team.

About:

Located in Port Alberni on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, Tsawaayuus Rainbow Gardens is operated by the WestCoast Native Health Care Society and serves as a culturally inclusive long-term care and assisted living home with a strong commitment to Indigenous values, traditions, and community. Tsawaayuus Rainbow Gardens is a multi-level care community providing 44 complex care beds, 10 assisted living units, in addition to 68 independent living apartments within the campus of care. We are dedicated to delivering compassionate, person-centered care that honours the physical, emotional, spiritual, and cultural needs of our Elders.

At Tsawaayuus Rainbow Gardens, we recognize the importance of holistic wellness and strive to provide a home-like environment where all residents, Indigenous and non-Indigenous alike, are treated with dignity, respect, and a deep sense of belonging. Our interprofessional team works collaboratively to uphold high standards of clinical care while fostering a sense of connection, cultural safety, and empowerment for residents and their families. We are proud to provide a workplace where staff are supported through mentorship, professional development, and the opportunity to be part of meaningful, community-driven care.

Position Overview:

Reporting to the Operations Manager, the Director of Care is responsible for ensuring high standards of resident care by overseeing all aspects of direct care in both Long Term Care and Assisted Living settings. This includes the supervision of nursing staff, care aides, and activity personnel, as well as involvement in recruitment, performance appraisals, training, and grievance handling. The role requires strong organizational skills, leadership, and clinical nursing knowledge, with a focus on resident and staff safety and ongoing quality improvement. The Director of Care plays a vital role in maintaining high standards of nursing practice and ensuring compliance with professional, legal, and organizational requirements.

Responsibilities:
  • Provide leadership and day-to-day supervision to direct care staff, including nurses, care aides, and activity personnel, ensuring quality resident care and staff performance.
  • Assign, adjust, and coordinate work schedules, monitor care delivery, and take corrective action as needed to maintain high standards and resident safety.
  • Promote interprofessional collaboration by mentoring staff, assessing clinical skills, and modeling best clinical practices.
  • Lead or participate in the investigation and resolution of resident and family complaints, implementing corrective actions where appropriate.
  • Collaborate with the Quality Resource Lead and participate in quarterly check-ins, site visits, and quality improvement initiatives, reporting to both the Board of Directors and Island Health.
  • Support care conferences and interdisciplinary rounds (e.g. post-fall, least restraint, palliative) to ensure optimal resident management.
  • Ensure timely and accurate submission of clinical data to CIHI, conduct internal audits, and apply findings to improve resident care plans.
  • Support staff learning by identifying educational needs, contributing to the development of learning objectives, and evaluating outcomes of training programs.
  • Assist in recruitment, hiring, and onboarding of staff, including input into orientation program development in collaboration with senior leadership.
  • Contribute to quality improvement, change management, and risk management activities, including conducting safety audits and evaluating changes in practice.
  • Participate in staff performance evaluations, resource planning, and budgeting, including identifying equipment needs.
  • Support the review and implementation of clinical policies, procedures, and decision support tools.
Qualifications:
  • Current practicing registration in good standing as a Registered Nurse with the British Columbia College of Nurses and Midwives (BCCNM) is required.
  • Minimum of three (3) years of recent related clinical experience in Long-Term Care and Assisted Living, including at least one (1) year in a supervisory or leadership role.
  • Equivalent combination of education, training, and experience may be considered.
  • Strong knowledge of nursing standards, provincial regulations, and best practices in geriatric and residential care.
Compensation:
  • The position offers a competitive annual salary of $115,000 – $125,000 based on experience and qualifications.
