Accountabilities: How You Will Make an Impact

The Mechanical and Civil Engineering Department is currently growing to respond to the needs of our nuclear portfolio including Bruce Power, OPG, New Brunswick Power and Cernavoda, among others. We are looking for a highly motivated and dynamic leader for our Section Manager, Mechanical Design role. The position provides an opportunity to lead a specialized team of engineers and designers and to manage a diverse portfolio of mechanical design activities through technical oversight of these professionals on various client projects.

Working closely with the Director, Mechanical and Civil Engineering, you will be responsible for the following key technical aspects for the section:

  • Leadership of mechanical-led multidisciplinary projects and oversight for mechanical design projects and development of junior designers.
  • Mechanical engineering activities including:
  • All aspects of power plant systems and equipment design and operation.
  • Pressure Boundary and Mechanical design activities, including specifications, assessments, hydraulic analysis, overpressure protection reports, design report reviews, etc.
  • Design modifications using established Engineering Change Control (ECC) processes.
  • Integration with other disciplines within Design Engineering and across Kinectrics.
  • Project Management services/oversight for mechanical design projects.
  • Working knowledge of relevant codes and standards including but not limited to CSA N285, ASME Section III, Section VIII and B31.1.
  • Knowledge and implementation of client Engineering Change Control process including BP-PROC-01081 for Bruce Power and N-PROC-MP-00090 for OPG.
  • Identify opportunities for synergy & integration with other Kinectrics service line offerings.
  • Manage quality processes and ensure best practices are followed through HU tools.

Performance and Leadership:

  • Leads by example and achieves results by effectively communicating technical job performance expectations.
  • Facilitate internal relationships and effective use of resources, including integration with other Kinectrics pillars and for multidiscipline project teams.
  • Proactively seek to enhance the resource base.
  • Responsible for staffing and resourcing decisions, including scheduling and assigning work.
  • Performs managerial functions such as hiring, promotion, performance reviews, pay increases, staff development. and disciplinary actions in accordance with established policies and procedures.
  • Provide mentoring and development to employees and contribute to the recruitment of new staff.
  • Identify growth and development opportunities for team members.

Financial:

  • Ensure business systems are updated and accurate including revenue forecasts.
  • Manage and motivate assigned staff and team members, achieving effective utilization of resources and prioritization. Ensure effective facility management, work allocation and safe operations.
  • Accomplish financial objectives by forecasting requirements; preparing an annual operations budget; scheduling expenditures; analysing variances; initiating corrective actions.
  • Supports Director with maintaining service line profit and loss, material cost, labour, and bottom-line results.

Culture Development:

  • Drives a culture of high performance and safety where everyone is committed to and accountable for delivery of performance goals and operational KPIs, ensuring a customer first culture.
  • Provides training and skill development for both day-to-day operations as well as for growth and improved performance.
  • Develop a culture of continuous improvement in processes and initiate/monitor corrective actions required to improve performance.
  • Creates and maintains a positive culture focused on worker morale and corporate social responsibility.

Health, Safety and Compliance:

  • Drives a culture of Right first time/Safety First and that all engineering work are conducted in compliance with municipal, provincial, and federal safety, workplace, or environmental regulations that apply to the facility.
  • Ensures quality of investigations to identify corrective action and non-recurrence.
  • Accountable supporting error free culture & staff behaviors by implementing human performance tools.

Management and Continuous Improvement:

  • Ensure that the business strategy is well developed and based on good market and competitor knowledge. The agreed strategy is to be clearly articulated and communicated.
  • Develop a business model which drives efficiency into the business.
  • Seek to grow the scope of the product and service enhancements, and ensure that the physical resources (CAPEX, facilities etc.) are appropriately up to date.
  • Create and deliver to rigorous production schedule ensuring every product is delivered on-time.
  • Build relationships with current and future customers while maintaining high customer satisfaction.
  • Ensure effective project management within service line.
  • Drive timely input to invoicing and collections processes.
  • Meet personal and team billability targets.
  • Ensure projects deliver to quality standards.

What You Need to Succeed

  • A Bachelor’s Degree (or higher) in Engineering. Professional Engineer of Ontario (PEO), or eligible for PEO status, with a passion for engineering.
  • 8+ years relevant work experience, with preference given relevant prior mechanical/piping design and analysis as well as site & management experience in the nuclear industry.
  • Familiarity with nuclear industry requirements for mechanical/piping design engineering.
  • Strong understanding of nuclear power plant design and operation.
  • Excellent understanding of Kinectrics Quality Assurance requirements and applicable industry codes and standards.
  • Demonstrated leadership ability among a team of individuals with diverse skill sets aligning them to exceed organizational goals.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills and demonstrated a high commitment to quality and delivering on client commitments, including experience in leading technical projects to successful conclusions.
  • Proven ability to successful manage large, complex, and multi-disciplinary projects and deliver on time and on budget.
  • Ability to build and maintain the working relationships with our customers and suppliers at the operating level.
  • Excellent interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills.
  • Strong team building, decision-making, mentorship, and people management skills.
  • Innovative, enthusiastic, and ready to be part of our dynamic leadership team.
