Eligibility Criteria:

  • Legally entitled to work in Canada as a student.
  • In possession of a Social Insurance Number (card) at time of hire.
  • Currently enrolled in a post-secondary educational institution on a full-time basis and returning to school in the fall of 2026.
Job Summary

This role is responsible for assisting with mosquito surveillance to monitor the risk of West Nile Virus.

Duties & Responsibilities
  • Survey potential mosquito breeding sites.

  • Set up and collect mosquito traps from various field habitats.
  • Perform larviciding activities.
  • Monitor and review application records for accuracy, completeness, and efficacy of treatment.
  • Enter, interpret data and prepare weekly reports.
  • Provide information to members of the public regarding activities conducted by Halton Region Public Health and means of reducing the risk of infection.
  • Work closely with regional staff on issues relating to West Nile virus.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Essential Skills & Qualifications
  • The successful candidate will be enrolled in science based programs.
  • Applicants must be able to work independently, with little supervision.
Preferred
  • An equivalent combination of education and/or experience will be considered.
  • Experience working in field and laboratory settings.
  • Strong computer skills.
Working / Employment Conditions
  • Travel will be required. Applicants must possess a valid Ontario Driver's license and have access to a vehicle with valid insurance. Required to provide a copy of their driver's license by their first day of employment.
  • Must obtain a Mosquito‑Biting Flies exterminator license from the Ministry of the Environment and Climate Change. The license must be obtained early during the course of employment. Employer will pay for the cost of training and fees incurred to obtain the license.
  • Once trained, should be able to proficiently discuss aspects of both mosquito surveillance and control methods with members of the public.
  • The successful candidate will be made an offer of employment on condition that the Regional Municipality of Halton receives a current (obtained within the past six (6) months), original and acceptable Criminal Records Check, by the first day of employment.
  • Flexibility in working hours will be required.
  • Must be able to perform all the necessary physical tasks associated with the position, such as: working outdoors for extended periods of time in wooded and wet areas, and handling equipment necessary for mosquito surveillance and larviciding.
  • Required to safely handle designated substances, including dry ice and larvicides.
