Director Analyst - IT Services – Sourcing, Procurement & Vendor Management

What makes Gartner Research & Advisory a GREAT fit for you?

  • You enjoy helping clients with best practices and recommendations.
  • You are a team player who values expert insights, bold ideas, and intellectual courage.
  • You are always learning and looking to discover what’s next in technology.
  • You pursue personal excellence through team collaboration and consensus.

If this describes you, Gartner is looking for you! Gartner is an upbeat culture based on collaboration, teamwork, integrity, and objectivity that values creativity and innovation. As a Gartner analyst, you’ll help clients solve complex challenges and deliver on key initiatives; you’ll grow your career and the scope of your impact across industries. We work hard — and we reward success with exceptional opportunity.

About this role:

This role creates thought-leading research and guides clients in the Software Engineering and IT application services market with a focus on sourcing practices, especially contracting and negotiations. This role will deliver guidance for our IT Leaders clients via conversations with clients (Inquiry), stage presentations, webinars, and client meetings (both virtual and live). It is important that you have a vision for how the Software Engineering and IT application services market will evolve worldwide (outsourced, nearshore & offshore) and at a regional level.

What you’ll do:

As a Gartner analyst, you will speak to Gartner clients either in a video call, from the stage at a Gartner event, or face-to-face during a sales support visit. In every client interaction, analysts help clients solve difficult sourcing issues, review their documents and service provider proposals, and guide them on best practices that will lead to better outcomes. To support these conversations, you will research markets, practices, and trends, and produce written research for Gartner clients to download and apply.

Your topic coverage will include:

  • Reviewing IT Outsourcing services or Application Solution implementation RFPs clients have developed and need best practice guidance.
  • Sharing Gartner research and helping them identify the best service providers in the market globally for the scope of services they are seeking support (e.g., custom software development).
  • Reviewing Services contracts from service providers for Outsourced services (Product/Backlog Management, software engineering, and custom software development) and identifying gaps in the terms or KPIs, SLAs, or how the proposed terms may not be in their favor.
  • Conducting research and analysis in specific areas of expertise targeting client’s key initiatives & delivering high-quality actionable advice through a variety of media.
  • Writing high-quality, clear, actionable, advisory research documents.
  • Remaining ahead of the curve on developments and issues within these specified areas as well as applicable adjacent areas, for example: contracting for agile delivery, contracting for PoCs and MVPs, Software Engineering approaches, AI and Gen AI, Web and Mobile Application Development, Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) Application Development, Analytics and BI, API and Integration services, User and Customer Experience, Quality Engineering and Technical Architecture and Cloud.
  • Responding to client questions via written responses, presentations, webinars, and inquiry calls.
  • Maintaining Gartner’s industry leadership reputation by responding to press inquiries and offering interviews to share Gartner’s insight.
  • Proactively working with the wider sales organization and delivering outstanding sales support to retain and grow the business.

What you’ll need:

It helps to be obsessed with your topic! Gartner analysts are correctly viewed as THE experts. This means you need to know your markets, vendors, trends, management practices, etc., and be able to see the forest and the trees. Most Gartner analysts have many years of experience and enjoy solving sourcing problems and helping others. Being able to summarize Gartner advice and confidently respond to client questions on a 30-minute call is a key competency to be successful in this role.

To be able to cover any of the topics, you will need:

  • Subject matter expertise in all phases of sourcing for IT services from 3rd party providers (outsourcing) in custom software development. This includes the ability to review RFPs, scope of work, contract terms, Business Outcomes, Productivity KPIs, SLAs for enterprise and SaaS software implementation proposals, and outsourced (onshore/offshore/nearshore) service deals.
  • Knowledge of service providers is a must, and knowledge of the global service provider landscape, and the competitive interplay between incumbents, emerging providers, disruptors, and outsourcers is desirable.

Sourcing services experience in three (3) or more below IT Services Markets is required:

  • Sourcing Strategies and options for DevOps strategy, DevOps Engineering, DevOps Managed Services.
  • Automation, Low-Code (LCAP)/No-Code and RPA-related services, including contracting models, SLAs, SOWs, and KPIs.
  • API Management and Integration Service Providers.
  • Custom Software Development Sourcing Strategy, including strategies for outsourcing custom software services; sourcing models; contracting for Agile Delivery; contracting for co-development and co-creation; and contracting models.
  • DevOps Platform / Product Engineering Services Contracting, including contracting models, KPIs, SLAs, and SOWs - Proposal Reviews.
  • Testing Services Contracting including contracting models, KPIs, SLAs, and SOWs - Proposal Reviews.
  • DevOps Product Services including contracting models, KPIs, SLAs, and SOWs - Proposal Reviews including Proof of Concepts or Minimum Viable Products.
  • AI, Gen AI, and ML Services Contracting including contracting models, KPIs, SLAs, and SOWs - Proposal Reviews.
  • Outsourcing Applications & Infrastructure (Hosting) Services (including offshore, nearshore) from strategy, supplier selection, contracts, and management of the deal.
  • Cloud Transformation Services i.e., Preparing and moving applications to the Cloud.
  • Enterprise Solutions implementations services (e.g., ERPs like SAP S4Hana, Oracle cloud, MS Dynamics, Desktop/Helpdesk solutions like Outlook365, ServiceNow, HCM, and CRM SaaS Solutions like Workday, Salesforce, etc.).
  • Applications Testing Services - including Automated Testing, Crowd Testing, Security testing, setting up testing CoE – SLAs, operational aspects, etc.

Additional requirements:

  • Articulate and succinct communication skills. Published research and experience as a speaker (e.g., keynotes, 1-to-many presentations) are beneficial.
  • Minimum of 8-10 years of experience in a research or technology-related role, end-user client (buyer) experience desired.
  • Experience with Professional Services contract development and negotiation is a plus.
  • Bachelor's or equivalent experience, Master's degree preferred.
