Job Summary:

The Team:

The Regional Communications and Engagement Section is a dynamic and growing team focused on building strong connections between the fire management program and local and First Nations governments. The team consists of four staff members: a Community Engagement Specialist who leads the team, a full-time Communications Specialist, and two seasonal Communications Assistants. As part of a newer, emerging section, this team works closely with the Coastal Fire Centre Leadership Team and regional managers, supporting fire prevention, mitigation, preparedness and response by fostering meaningful relationships with local and First Nations governments. The work you'll do here is impactful, ensuring clear communication and engagement while helping to strengthen partnerships in fire management across the region.

The Role:

As the Community Engagement Specialist, you will work closely with both internal teams and external partners to develop and strengthen relationships with local and First Nations governments, helping to create a strategic approach to community engagement. Your efforts will directly support fire prevention, mitigation, and response, while also contributing to the development of a regional strategy. This is an exciting opportunity to be a key point of contact in a growing, front-facing team, where your work will have a tangible impact on communities. Qualifications:

Education and Experience Requirements:

  1. Bachelor's degree in Communications, Community Engagement or Natural Resource Management plus two years related experience; or
  2. Diploma in Communications, Community Engagement or Natural Resource Management plus four years related experience; or
  3. Grade 12 plus six years related experience or an equivalent combination of education and training.
  4. Two years demonstrated supervisory experience.
  5. Two years' experience developing and applying stakeholder engagement tools and strategies.
  6. Demonstrated experience facilitating groups whose members hold varying interests, in a natural resource or wildfire management context.
  7. Demonstrated experience in project management and working within project teams.
  8. Related experience is defined as communications, community engagement, First Nations engagement, natural resources, or wildfire management.
  9. Valid BC Drivers Licence (Class 5 or 7).

Preference statement(s):

  1. Demonstrated experience in applying strategic and conceptual thinking to effectively communicate and engage on complex and contentious issues to achieve the desired outcome.
  2. Experience with wildfire management practices and principles.
  3. Experience with natural resource or wildfire management legislation, and policy or knowledge of natural resource or wildfire management and First Nations relations issues in British Columbia.
  4. To be flexible regarding ongoing changes in responsibilities, assignments, and corporate structures.
  5. To keep current on emerging issues.
  6. To take in-house training and certification as required.
  7. To fly in aircraft (fixed wing and rotary) as required.
  8. To work extended hours, including weekends, and be on standby with limited notice in accordance with the preparedness plan.
  9. To travel and overnight in remote locations where accommodations may vary as required.
  10. To participate in Incident Command System (ICS) positions as assigned.
  11. To work under adverse or stressful conditions, including smoke, extreme heat, and mountainous terrain in remote and isolated conditions.

Flexible work options are available; this position may be able to work up to 2 days at home per week subject to an approved telework agreement. Flexible work options may not be available during emergency operations response periods.
