Overview

Position: Underwriter Credit Insurance Underwriting (Multiple Roles)

Employment Type: Permanent

Location: Hybrid work environment with in-office presence 2 days per week (subject to change). Roles available from EDC’s headquarters in Ottawa, Toronto, Montreal, Halifax, Calgary or Vancouver. Relocation assistance is available for eligible candidates.

Team overview

EDC’s Credit Insurance Underwriting group seeks dynamic professionals to assist Canadian companies in growing internationally. You will engage with customers to structure insurance coverage and assess counterparty creditworthiness, supporting international trade and the group’s performance and growth objectives.

What you will be doing

  • Establish relationships with internal and external customers.
  • Understand customer needs, determine optimal insurance coverage structure, terms and conditions, and deliver the product to the client or prospect.
  • Provide ongoing customer service as a subject matter expert.
  • Assess the creditworthiness of foreign companies using in-depth financial and credit analysis (liquidity, leverage, cash-flow, profitability, etc.).
  • Develop loss mitigation strategies when allocated credits are at risk.
  • Participate in continuous process improvement initiatives to streamline operations.
  • Identify problems and champion enhancements to existing processes.
  • Contribute to overall program results through excellence and execution.

What we are looking for

  • Undergraduate degree in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, Commerce or other relevant discipline (for all levels).
  • 2 years (Underwriter level 15), 2–5 years (Underwriter level 16) or >5 years (Underwriter level 17) of experience in insurance underwriting or related financial services.
  • Solid experience reading and interpreting financial statements with strong financial analysis skills.
  • Experience structuring and negotiating complex structures with a can-do attitude and an outside-the-box mindset.
  • Comfortable meeting with exporters at Executive and Senior Leadership levels to assess needs and outline appropriate structures.
  • Personal agility: resilience and openness to changes in EDC’s business environment and structure; adaptability to changing requirements; comfort in ambiguous situations; ability to work in a matrix environment.
  • Strong communication and collaboration skills; strong client service skills (internal and external).
  • Significant experience leading the successful completion of increasingly complex commercial credit transactions across various industries and international markets.

What will make you stand out

  • International and/or commercial banking experience.
  • MBA, CFA or CPA designation.
  • Working knowledge of insurance underwriting principles and practices.
  • Advanced Excel skills; coding skills are an asset.
  • Proficiency in English and French (fully bilingual).
