Overview
Senior Electrical Engineer – Calgary, Alberta. Reports To: VP of Engineering / President.
The Senior Electrical Engineer will be responsible for establishing and leading the electrical engineering design department within the firm. This role requires an individual who is not only capable of managing a team but also actively involved in hands-on design work. A primary focus will be on acquiring new clients, building lasting relationships, and ensuring the successful delivery of electrical designs across various sectors. This position offers a base salary plus bonus based on the new clients acquired by the candidate.
Key Responsibilities
- Hands-On Design Work: Lead and participate in the design of electrical systems, including lighting, power distribution, emergency systems, and sustainable energy solutions. Oversee and execute hands-on design work for complex electrical engineering projects, ensuring compliance with client specifications and industry standards. Manage the technical delivery of electrical designs from concept through to completion, ensuring quality and accuracy.
- Client Acquisition and Business Development: Acquire new clients by actively pursuing relationships with government agencies, property developers, commercial clients, and other industries. Manage and expand the client pipeline, ensuring a continuous flow of new projects for the department. Drive business growth by securing new contracts, with a bonus structure linked to the successful acquisition of new clients. Act as the main point of contact for all clients, managing expectations and delivering tailored electrical engineering solutions.
- Project Management and Delivery: Oversee electrical engineering projects from start to finish, including budgeting, scheduling, and resource allocation. Ensure designs meet the required standards and regulatory guidelines while meeting client expectations and timelines. Coordinate with contractors, suppliers, and other project stakeholders to ensure timely and successful project delivery.
- Department Development and Leadership: Establish and lead the electrical engineering design department, including defining processes, standards, and building a high-performing team. Recruit, mentor, and manage electrical engineers and technical staff to ensure continued development and excellence. Develop and implement best practices, design standards, and workflows for the department. Collaborate with other engineering disciplines (mechanical, structural) to deliver integrated design solutions.
- Team and Department Growth: Develop and implement training programs to foster growth and skill enhancement within the electrical engineering team. Establish departmental goals and KPIs, focusing on client satisfaction, project quality, and profitability.
Qualifications and Skills
- Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field (Master’s preferred).
- Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) designation in Alberta is required.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer in the US is a plus.
- Minimum of 7 years of experience in electrical engineering design.
- Proven ability to acquire new clients and secure contracts.
- Extensive experience in hands-on electrical design, not just in a managerial capacity.
- Proficient with AutoCAD, Revit, and electrical design software commonly used in the industry.
- In-depth knowledge of local building codes, industry standards, and regulatory requirements in Alberta.
- Excellent communication, leadership, and interpersonal skills.
- A strong background in business development and client management.
