The Employee Safety and Injury Prevention unit leads the development and oversight of workplace safety strategies across government departments, promoting a proactive safety culture and legislative compliance. The Safety & Health Officer leads and develops Health & Safety programming, provides compliance oversight and delivers training to department Health & Safety units and management.
Conditions of Employment:
Reporting to the Manager of Employee Safety and Injury Prevention, this role plays a key part in a comprehensive occupational health and safety strategy. The incumbent will develop, implement, and maintain safety programs in alignment with legislative requirements, including the Workplace Safety and Health Act and WHMIS. Responsibilities include conducting risk assessments and job hazard analyses to proactively identify and mitigate workplace hazards, as well as leading or supporting incident investigations to ensure thorough documentation, root cause analysis, and corrective action follow-up. The position will collaborate with management and Workplace Safety and Health Committees to ensure compliance and engagement, maintain detailed safety records, and liaise with external regulatory bodies such as SAFE Work Manitoba and the Workers Compensation Board. Additionally, the role advises leadership on safety policies, emergency preparedness, and fire safety, while championing a culture of safety and continuous improvement through strategic planning and awareness initiatives.
