Job description
Your Opportunity:

The Palliative Care Unit (PCU) is part of the premier palliative program in Southern Alberta. It consists of 10 palliative beds that are focused on end-of-life care. This unit primarily admits patients whose life expectancy is less than 3 months or who require pain management with their palliative diagnosis. RNs lead the unit and are part of the greater PCU team that includes LPNs, HCAs, Registered Dietitian, Pharmacist, Social Worker, Unit Clerks, Spiritual Care Coordinator, Physicians and the regions palliative team. In addition, the PCU department hosts 8 Long Term Care - Complex Beds.

Description:

The Registered Nurse (RN) participates in nursing assessments and interventions, care planning, implementing prescribed treatments, administering medications, evaluating treatments, and monitoring/documenting treatment progress and patient/resident response. Acting as an advocate, coordinator and liaison for the patient/resident, the RN identifies needs and sets priorities in collaboration with the multidisciplinary team. The RN facilitates patient/resident and family education and discharge planning, and may be required to act in a charge nurse capacity. The RN is responsible for the provision of care in accordance with established standards, and the Mission, Vision, Values, policies and procedures of Covenant Health. This position is covered by the terms and conditions of the UNA Collective Agreement.

    Required Qualifications:

    Graduate of a Registered Nurse program or recognized equivalent required. Active registration with the College of Registered Nurses of Alberta (CRNA) required. Basic Life Support Healthcare Provider (Level C) required.     Additional Required Qualifications:

    Minimum 2 years of recent experience in a palliative care or hospice setting. Strong knowledge of palliative care principles, including pain and symptom management, ethical and emotional support, and end-of-life care. Excellent clinical assessment skills and the ability to develop and implement individualized care plans. Compassionate communication skills, with the ability to provide empathetic support to patients and families during a challenging time. Ability to work effectively within an interdisciplinary team and manage complex care needs. Physically able to complete all demanding aspects of patient/resident care and transport, e.g. walking, standing, bending, lifting, assuming awkward positions and standing for long durations of time. Must be able to understand written and verbal directions in English.

    Preferred Qualifications:

    Certification in Palliative Care Nursing (e.g., Certified Hospice and Palliative Nurse (CHPN)) or advanced training in palliative care. Experience with electronic health record (EHR) systems, such as Connect Care. Knowledge of Alberta’s regulations and best practices related to palliative care. Advanced skills in symptom management and providing emotional and spiritual support.
