Job description

To fill a seasonal vacancy. Reporting to the Public Works Manager, the Public Works Summer Student Technician is responsible for assisting in various municipal engineering and contract administration activities including the coordination of capital projects, facilities, and maintenance contracts. This position will also support the Public Works department with construction inspections, surveying, data collection, and various seasonal duties related to Public Works.

Construction & Technical Services Duties:

• Assist in the review of engineering plans and specifications and provide input on the technical and infrastructure considerations.
• Prepare and calculate estimates on quantities and pricing for capital and materials purchases.
• Assist the Public Works Manager to review initial surveys and provide grades and alignment for maintenance projects for drainage, resurfacing, and pre-marking.
• Monitor and track progress on permit conditions relating to regulatory approvals on construction projects. (took road tickets)
• Assist in the preparation of designs, specifications, and drawings for municipal capital projects and other works including cost estimates and recommendations.
• Assist in meetings with consultants and contracted services, conduct field visits and inspections daily.
• Participate in all aspects of the Occupational Health and Safety Act and maintain knowledge of municipal policies.
• Appropriately wear all Personal Protective Equipment as provided to maintain personal safety while completing tasks.
• Other duties as assigned.

Administrative Duties:

• Assist in the preparation of Council reports and presentations; evaluating, recommending, and administering tenders; reviewing and preparing specifications, requests for proposals, expressions of interest, contracts, and other capital related documents.
• Assist contract administration duties by overseeing contractor performance, monitoring progress, and report back to the Public Works Manager.
• Assist in special assignments and projects assigned by the Public Works Manager.

Labourer:

• Flagging, requiring extended periods of standing
• Landfill site maintenance
• Maintaining roads in good condition for safe, hazard-free driving.
• Installation and maintenance of culverts.
• Repairing and installing street signs, etc.
• To assist in maintaining garages and vehicles regularly in accordance with routine maintenance procedures.
• Brushing
• Removing Beaver Dams and cleaning culverts of debris
• Patrolling roads
• Perform other related duties, including labourer activities assigned. E.g., shoveling, sweeping, removal of debris, shop cleaning and other related physical activities as assigned
