Job Description
Accountabilities
- Performs all food services duties in a manner that meets or exceeds Food Safe, OH&S, Canada Food Guideline and Edmonton Centre of Hope standards.
- Prepares and pre-prepares food items required for resident meals, including salads, salad dressings, vegetables, fruit plates, desserts, and items for residents, catering functions and community programs.
- Follows standardized recipes and approved procedures for washing, trimming, chopping, assembling, and portioning food.
- Performs duties requiring simple baking and cooking procedures for items such as muffins, puddings, custards, simple desserts, rice and pasta.
- Adheres to procedures for the preparation and storage of food supplies.
- Reports spoiled or defective food supplies immediately to the Lead Cook.
- Utilizes overproduced items within their lifespan where appropriate.
- Assists in maintaining stock room inventory levels to ensure records are accurate and updated.
- Operates all food services equipment according to instructions and safety standards.
- Performs all cleaning duties and ensures Food Services area (storage, kitchen, dining room) is clean, orderly, and up to standards.
- Ensures that all food service facilities and equipment are maintained according to Edmonton Centre of Hope standards; deficiencies are recorded and reported to Lead Cooks for follow-up.
- Assists in training and orientation of new staff, interns, NAIT and work experience students.
- Participates in team meetings.
- Performs lifting tasks as required up to a maximum of 23 kilos or 50 lbs using proper lifting procedures.
- Performs other related duties as required.

Managerial Responsibility
- This position reports directly to the Lead Cook.
- No direct reports
Financial and Materials Management
- Ensure that all food service facilities and equipment are maintained according to Edmonton Centre of Hope standards.
- Ensure records are accurate, updated daily, and utilized in the ordering process.
- Ensure food purchased or donated is utilized appropriately without wastage.
Working Conditions
- Requires standing, handling food, frequent lifting, carrying supplies, walking, and occasional cleaning of floors and kitchen equipment. Lift up to 23 kilos or 50 lbs.
- Must be in good physical condition to bend, kneel or stoop to lift items such as dishes, tools, machinery, and food preparation equipment.
- All Food Service Workers must wear close-toed, non-skid shoes, which are a personal expense and must be worn at all times.

Education and Experience Qualifications
Education, Qualifications and Certifications
- High School Diploma/GED
- Certificate in culinary skills (an added advantage)
- Food Safe Handling Certificate
- Clear Criminal Record Check with Vulnerable Sector Check
Experience and Skilled Knowledge Requirements
- Minimum 1 year of experience in an institutional or commercial kitchen.
- Strong knowledge of proper food handling procedures, health and safety standards.
- Knowledge of food preparation, quantity planning to minimize wastage and sanitation procedures.

- Good communication skills and ability to work in a team in a busy kitchen

Work Environment
The incumbent’s work environment is typically at work sites within residential settings and may involve the following conditions:
- Dealing with angry and abusive people
- Verbal abuse
- Exposure to bodily fluids and waste
- Exposure to drugs, alcohol and solvents
- On-call 24/7 or as scheduled
- Physical attacks by others
- Exposure to infectious diseases
- Exposure to toxic chemicals
- Sharp objects (e.g., needles, knives)

- Immunization for Hepatitis B
- Vaccination against Tuberculosis
Casual position with no fixed schedule. Target hiring range: $20.22 per hour at Step 1 to $23.73 per hour at Step 5.
Compensation
The target hiring range is $20.22 to $21.98 with a maximum of $23.73. Placement in the salary range will be based on market conditions, internal equity, and candidate experience, skills, and qualifications relevant to the role.
