DEPARTMENT OVERVIEW

The Educational Partnership Center (EPC) coordinates new and longstanding student academic preparation efforts of the University of California, Santa Cruz with the goal of increasing access and opportunity to postsecondary education for underserved students across the Monterey Bay and Silicon Valley/San Jose regions. We provide an array of direct services, supporting students on the college-going pathway through tutoring, mentoring, academic planning and counseling, leadership training, test preparation, college awareness and enrichment, and teacher professional development. Programs in the EPC include:

  • California Student Opportunity and Access Program (Cal-SOAP)
  • California State Summer School for Mathematics and Science (COSMOS)
  • California Reading and Literature Project (CRLP)
  • Early Academic Outreach Program (EAOP)
  • Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP)
  • Mathematics, Engineering, Science Achievement (MESA)

JOB SUMMARY

The College Facilitator (CF) will participate in efforts to increase the number of educationally disadvantaged and/or low-income students who attain eligibility and competitiveness for admission to postsecondary education. The CF will provide services designed to motivate junior high and/or high school students in assigned region to prepare academically for higher education. Services will include, but are not limited to; supporting students on the college-going pathway through tutoring, mentoring, academic planning and counseling, leadership training, test preparation, college awareness and enrichment, and teacher professional development.

APPOINTMENT INFORMATION

Budgeted Salary: $61,500 - $65,000/Annually. Salary commensurate with skills, qualifications and experience.
Under California law, the University of California, Santa Cruz is required to post a reasonable estimate of the compensation for this role. The salary shown above is the budgeted amount the University reasonably expects to pay and the salary extended should not exceed this posted amount.

JOB DUTIES

  • 20% - Delivers individual and group advising services and maintains relationships with a group of K-14 students.
  • 20% - Designs and implements grade-appropriate college-going workshops, field trips, curricula, materials and activities. Implements and facilitates recruitment for events. Travels to various program sites, field trips, and events and may transport materials as needed within their assigned region in a timely manner. The amount of travel may vary by day and depend on program needs.
  • 15% - Develops student academic plans to ensure post-secondary admission eligibility. Acts as advocate for students and parents.
  • 15% - Develops collaborative relationships with other college-going programs and K-14 higher education personnel. Serves on department, organization, and external committees, workgroups, and coordinating bodies. Participates in strategic and program planning.
  • 10% - Prepares appropriate forms and documentation needed to account for, process and capture expenditures and in-kind support.
  • 10% - Produces program reports, collects student data, documents participant contacts and progress, and tracks academic progress of program participants.
  • 10% - Trains, supervises, and evaluates job performance of part-time, student, and / or summer staff.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor's degree in related area and / or equivalent experience / training.
  • Strong knowledge and experience working with educational equity programs serving a diverse student population.
  • Knowledge of K-12 and higher education institutions (UC, CSU, CC, etc.), admissions and financial aid requirements, and the ability to interpret policies and procedures to youth, parents, and school representatives.
  • Knowledge of issues facing low-income, first generation youth.
  • Ability to establish and maintain cooperative relationships with school district administrators, school counselors, principals, teachers, and community contacts.
  • Demonstrated cultural competency with respect to race, ethnicity, and socio-economic status.
  • Strong written communications skills.
  • Strong verbal communications and interpersonal skills.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Strong knowledge of high school graduation and college entrance requirements.
  • Strong knowledge of up-to-date information on K-12 and higher education policies and issues. Ability to assess their impact on program strategies.
  • Significant experience advising and supporting educationally disadvantaged students regarding postsecondary opportunities and careers.

SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT

  • Selected candidate will be required to pass a pre-employment criminal history background check.
  • Selected candidate must pass the employment misconduct disclosure process.
  • Must possess CPR/First Aid/AED certification or have the ability to obtain it within 60-calendar days of hire.
  • Must possess a valid license to drive in the state of California.
  • The selected candidate will be required to work a hybrid work schedule and must be able to work successfully from a home/remote office and fulfill the requirements of the UCSC telecommuting agreement.
  • Ability to work occasional evenings and weekends as directed.
  • Selected candidate will be required to provide proof of negative TB test.
  • Selected candidate will be required to complete training within established time frames as directed including UC compliance training.
  • Ability to travel to multiple work locations on and off campus.
  • Ability to travel within a defined regional or service area.
  • Ability to travel nationally.
  • Ability to maintain appearance and conduct suitable for working in a professional setting.
  • Exercise the utmost discretion in managing sensitive information learned in the course of performing their duties. Sensitive information includes but is not limited to employee and student records, health and patient records, financial data, strategic plans, proprietary information and any other sensitive or non-public information learned during the course and scope of employment. Understands that sensitive information should be shared on a limited basis and actively takes steps to limit access to sensitive information to individuals who have legitimate business need to know. Ensure that sensitive information is properly safeguarded. Follow all organizational policies and laws on data protection and privacy. This includes secure handling of physical and digital records and proper usage of IT systems to prevent data leaks. The unauthorized or improper disclosure of confidential work-related information obtained from any source on any work-related matter is a violation of these expectations.
