Under minimal supervision, the Field Underwriter is responsible for generating new business opportunities by building and maintaining strong broker relationships. They analyze the acceptability of business according to company guidelines and provide value-added underwriting expertise, service, and guidance to both potential and existing members.
Job Responsibilities
- Represent the company, build strong relationships, and manage the book of business to attain profit and revenue objectives.
- Act as the key contact for specified brokers.
- Achieve sales goals through generating new business opportunities.
- Build an account inventory of new business well in advance of the expiration date to meet profit and revenue targets.
- Discuss new accounts in the pipeline regularly, review opportunities, and establish underwriting relationships with brokers.
- Underwrite and manage a commercial lines book of business for an assigned territory.
- Collaborate on new and renewal commercial lines accounts, pre-qualify members, and work with the production team to analyze opportunities.
- Maintain accurate records of accounts and review unsuccessful accounts to improve sales and competitive intelligence.
- Communicate effectively regarding underwriting procedures, growth, and profit goals.
- Review loss control inspections, participate in underwriting projects, and suggest improvements in coverage, pricing, or competitiveness.
- Participate in insurance and broker events.
- Travel using an assigned fleet vehicle within the territory, including short notice or daily driving duties.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Five years of Property and Casualty industry experience.
- Post-secondary education or related business experience.
- Completion or active pursuit of a Property and Casualty Industry Designation.
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
- Strong attention to detail and comprehensive review skills.
- Excellent decision-making skills with justified reasoning.
- Effective communication skills for presenting information convincingly.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to adapt to change and perform under pressure.
- Ability to multitask and meet deadlines.
- Independent work capability and sound decision-making.
- Willingness to travel and visit brokers regularly within the territory.
- A valid driver’s license.
