Job summary

Job (Calgary): Drama Class Instructors – Pumphouse Theatre

The Pumphouse Theatre is now accepting applications for contract‑based instructors for our winter 2021 drama education programs. The Pumphouse is a vibrant historic facility that supports and presents all art forms and creates opportunities for engagement, enrichment, cultural experience, learning and inspiration, while serving all Calgarians.

We offer a wide range of drama education opportunities for youth, fostering imagination, freedom to explore creativity, a healthy sense of play and a lifelong appreciation for the arts. Our drama classes cover acting, improvisation, creative movement, voice, sound, storytelling and playwriting, and aim to develop social interaction and life skills through theatrical techniques.

Class options are listed below:

  • Creation in Motion | Ages 9‑12
    Location: The Pumphouse Theatre
    Sunday 10:00‑12:00 am; Jan 10 – Mar 21, 2021 (no class Feb 14)
    Max: 12
    This course explores storytelling through physicality. Participants will learn skills in choreography, mime, mask, and more while harnessing imagination and creativity. No previous experience is required.
  • Theatre Arts Exploration | Ages 9‑12
    Location: The Pumphouse Theatre
    Saturdays 10:00‑12:00 am; Jan 9 – Mar 20, 2021 (no class Feb 13)
    Max: 12
    This all‑inclusive exploration of the art of theatre encourages new skills in theatre techniques such as character, improvisation, scene study, and more. No previous experience required.
  • Improv for Teens II | Ages 13‑17
    Location: The Pumphouse Theatre
    Mondays 6:00‑8:00 pm; Jan 11 – Mar 22, 2021 (no class Feb 15)
    Max: 12
    This course is a gateway into the world of improvisation. Building off the basics, participants explore theatresports, character, story, and improv games. Previous experience is encouraged.

Instructors will work under the guidance of the Programming Director to create, plan, and execute the course‑based curriculum for the semester. Successful applicants will:

  • Possess the ability to supervise young people aged 5‑17 and have previous experience in this area.
  • Have an understanding of or be willing to learn the creative theatre process.
  • Display strong communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Be committed to the creative development and theatrical education of participants.
  • Have some experience with the creative use and construction of props, costumes, and sets (asset).
  • Be certified in Basic First Aid.
  • Know how to have fun!
