Course Number and Title: IRE1260HF - Seminar on Labour Arbitration
Course Description: This course is intended to provide an overview of the labour arbitration process applicable to unionized employees. The course will focus primarily on grievance arbitration and examine both procedural and substantive issues, including the scope of arbitration, pre-arbitration and arbitration processes and select issues in arbitration – discipline and discharge, contract interpretation, disability accommodation, privacy and discrimination. Mediation and med/arb as alternative dispute resolution mechanisms will also be discussed. The format will be a combination of lecture/seminar, class discussion, in-class exercises, video review and mock arbitration. Students will participate in mock arbitration hearings.

Schedule: Mondays and Wednesdays, 18:00 – 20:00
This course is scheduled to be delivered in-person. Please note that the course delivery method may change as determined by the University or the Centre.

Completed Ph.D. in Industrial Relations, Human Resources, or related discipline; or a combination of advanced degrees (e.g. MIRHR/MBA/LLB in applicable area) and equivalent professional background.
Expert knowledge of the subject area and demonstrated ability in university teaching. Previous experience in teaching a similar course is preferred.
Prepare a course syllabus in accordance with departmental guidelines. Prepare and deliver lectures (12 two-hour classes); be available for office hours and informal communications with students. Assess and evaluate students' work and provide final course grades in accordance with university and department practices. Supervision of Teaching Assistant(s), if applicable.
