Overview
Health & Safety Specialist role at Maple Leaf Foods Inc. The successful candidate will be responsible for the development, implementation, and maintenance of the Company’s Occupational Health & Safety (OHS) programs, policies, systems and reports for the Heritage Plant. This position ensures legislative and plant compliance with occupational health and safety through on-the-floor involvement with operations. The role includes assisting in the development of safe work procedures, training, claims management and risk assessment to reduce or eliminate accidents and incidents.
Responsibilities
- Develop Safe Work Procedures (SWP) identifying basic job steps, hazards and risks, and develop safe operating procedures and hazard controls to sustain OHS maturity and growth.
- Enforce the business Golden Rules and other site programs through cross-functional team meetings.
- Maintain OHS metrics and documentation and present information to applicable parties.
- Design and deliver training programs for workers, management, and Safety Committee members to comply with legislative requirements and improve Health, Safety, Emergency and Security.
- Assist in reducing Health and Safety risks through onsite behavioral observations and targeted audits.
- Support Pre-Start Health and Safety Reviews (PSRs) for installation of new equipment, structures, protective elements or processes, or modifications; detail measures to bring operations into compliance with regulations.
- Review and monitor on-site Contractor OHS programs for regulatory compliance.
- Respond to and support accident response, including first aid and investigation follow-up.
- Support emergency management activities including drills, tabletop exercises, evacuation support and incident command system participation during actual emergencies.
- Maintain content and data analysis for site programs using systems such as SAP, iWarehouse, iNet, Alchemy Systems, and other PPE or vendor platforms.
- Maintain records and documentation for all programs under your purview and ensure data integrity and confidentiality of employee information.
- Support and influence multiple levels of management within the organization.
What You’ll Bring
- 3-5 years of experience in progressively responsible Health & Safety roles.
- Experience supporting a large client group in a fast-paced environment within specified time frames is an asset.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills.
- Knowledge of compliance and regulatory training for all personnel onsite.
- Computer proficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, PowerPoint & Outlook).
- Experience with regulatory bodies (e.g., Ministry of Labour or Ministry of the Environment) is an asset.
- Knowledge of WSIB claims management is an asset.
