Overview

Summit Search Group has been engaged by Darling International on the recruitment of their next Environmental Supervisor. Darling International is a global leader in repurposing and recycling materials from the animal agriculture and food industries, transforming them into sustainable products that fuel transportation, fertilize crops, feed animals, and nourish people.

Based in Winnipeg, MB, the Environmental Supervisor plays a critical role in managing the Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) operations. Reporting to the Plant Manager, this position leads a team of wastewater technicians and oversees daily operations while ensuring environmental compliance, operational efficiency, and safety. This role also involves fostering collaboration across multiple departments to maintain regulatory standards and support process improvements.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead and manage day-to-day operations of the Wastewater Treatment Plant, Decanting, and Scrubber systems to ensure regulatory compliance and system performance.
  • Supervise and coach a team of wastewater technicians, including training, scheduling, and performance management.
  • Monitor, troubleshoot, and maintain equipment and processes for air, wastewater, and decanting systems.
  • Review laboratory analysis results, checklists, and logs; investigate irregularities and resolve technical issues.
  • Manage the safe handling, storage, and documentation of hazardous waste and ensure compliance with environmental standards.
  • Develop, review, and maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) to align with legal and regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct regular safety audits, ensure adherence to company safety policies, and oversee proper operation of all equipment.
  • Investigate and resolve public odor complaints while communicating findings with senior management and regulatory bodies.
  • Collaborate with the Maintenance Department to plan schedules, coordinate work orders, and follow up on repairs and upgrades.
  • Prepare and monitor budgets, order supplies, and evaluate opportunities for cost savings and continuous improvement.
  • Provide detailed reports, including Environmental Scorecards, and ensure transparent communication with all stakeholders.
Qualifications & Experience

Required:

  • Post-secondary education in Environmental Science or a related discipline.
  • Minimum 2-5 years of supervisory experience in wastewater treatment, environmental operations, or a similar role.
  • Strong organizational skills and proven ability to prioritize tasks in a fast-paced environment.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to collaborate across departments and regulatory bodies.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, Outlook).
  • Demonstrated knowledge of environmental compliance regulations and safety procedures.

Preferred:

  • Experience in food manufacturing or rendering environments.
  • Familiarity with Lean, 5S methodologies, or other process improvement frameworks.
  • Proven success leading cross-functional teams and driving operational efficiencies.
