About the Opportunity

The Urology Associate Physician is a licensed physician employed by Nova Scotia Health to provide medical care under the supervision of a fully licensed physician. They will have clearly defined clinical duties within the Department of Urology in both the inpatient and outpatient settings. The Associate Physician will primarily be responsible for direct patient care activities under the supervision of an attending Urologist. Participation in the call schedule is required. The Associate Physician will report directly to the Associate Physician Program Director or designate and indirectly to the Central Zone Executive Medical Director through the Director of Medical Affairs, NSH.

Clinical Responsibilities

• Makes regular rounds with supervising staff, fellows, and residents on the wards, the emergency department and in the ICU as required
• Works with attending staff, nurses, pharmacists, dietitians, social workers, physiotherapists, physician house staff, and other members of the health care team in the development and delivery of the overall patient care program
• Communicates with patients, families, referring and family physicians concerning patient management plans
• Performs and documents admission history, physical examinations, progress notes, discharge summaries, death certificates, medication reconciliations
• Manages the day-to-day care of patients, including writing medical orders and consultations of other services and responding to emergencies in hospital
• If competency to do so, the AP will conduct assessments of patients in the emergency room and in-house patient consultations to Urology
• Performs procedures within the scope of demonstrated competence including: peripheral intravenous lines, initiation of intravenous medication, blood sampling for diagnostics or arterial blood gases, insertion of Foley catheters, insertion of nasogastric tubes, assessment of surgical wounds, suturing, removal of sutures, removal of surgical drains and nephrostomy tubes, and insertion/removal of central venous catheters
• If competency to do so, the AP may perform management of difficult catheterization including flexible cystoscopy/dilation of strictures/insertion of a catheter over guidewire
• Assists in the operating room when on call or when no residents are available during the day
• Arranges consultations with other departments/services for patient care and investigation
• Follows through on investigations and arranges follow-up outpatient visits
• Participates in Continuing Professional Development (educational sessions, tumor boards, and rounds) of at least 50 hours per year
• Interacts with and orients clinical clerks and PGY1s new to the Urology Service
• Participates in on-call responsibilities of the service
• Assists in the operating room, if necessary
• Responsibilities and duties are not all-inclusive

About You

• Must meet the requirements to obtain a Clinical Assistant License from The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia (Clinical Assistant Licence - Registration Policies College of Physicians & Surgeons of Nova Scotia). Must have obtained in writing a Review of Qualifications from The College of Physicians and Surgeons of Nova Scotia prior to application deadline. Please upload this with your application

• Completion of the equivalence of a rotating internship. Postgraduate training and experience in urology or another surgical specialty is an asset. Experience in active general or family practice in the community would be considered an asset
• Physical and mental demand: must be able to sit, stand, walk and perform duties; mental and visual demand – high; must be able to deal with stressful situations
• Competencies in other languages are an asset; French preferred
