About the Role
Reporting to the Director of Finance, the Accounting Manager oversees day-to-day accounting operations and ensures accurate, timely financial reporting across multiple business units. This role supports monthly close, audit, compliance, and forecasting by coordinating inputs from cross-functional teams. The ideal candidate is proactive, detail-oriented, and able to work independently while supporting broader financial planning efforts. This position will assist finance staff and business operational staff while supporting the Director and Senior Management.
Key Responsibilities
- Preparation and review of divisional monthly financial statements, ensuring accuracy of expenses and revenue recognition for multiple business units for SJC Communications Group.
- Provide Sales Reports, including Sales Forecast, to the sales team and Management.
- Evaluation of financial performance by analyzing monthly financial statements, accruing for revenues and costs, intersecting with business operations team members as required.
- Prepare or review recurring entries such as event reconciliations, media Capex, and affiliate cost allocations; manage accruals, including ad portal, print, and project-related entries, along with paper credit journals and reclassifications.
- Reconciles reports, including revenues, accounts receivable, unbilled, and deferred revenue.
- Prepare bonus and commission calculations based on sales rep’s agreements.
- Review remittances and GL reconciliations, identifying and resolving issues proactively.
- Performs ad-hoc analysis, reports, and projects as required.
- Support circulation reporting and ad hoc financial analysis as required
- Collaborate with internal teams to continuously improve reporting accuracy and process efficiency.
- Financial system implementation (if applicable).
Forecasting & Budgeting
- Support the Director of Finance in the monthly forecasting and annual budgeting process.
- Coordinate with internal stakeholders (Sales, Operations, Content teams) to gather relevant data and assumptions.
- Maintain consolidated forecast files and update expected billings weekly based on AR and sales rep input.
- Upload forecast data into NetSuite and ensure the integrity of submissions.
Compliance
- Support annual financial audit by preparing schedules, pulling data, and addressing auditor queries.
- Review sales accruals, project margins, and deferred revenue recognition.
- Ensure tax compliance, including HST reviews and mentoring team members on tax-related entries.
- Independently manage day-to-day accounting operations, including issue resolution and problem-solving.
- Collaborate with the production team to ensure timely cost capture and revenue matching.
- Guide junior staff and analysts, fostering accuracy and accountability.
- Provide input on financial systems and support implementation / improvement efforts as needed.
Qualifications and Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance; CPA designation preferred.
- 5+ years of progressive experience in accounting and financial reporting.
- Proactive and self-directed with strong organizational and analytical skills.
- Experience with NetSuite or similar ERP systems preferred.
- Advanced Excel skills; ability to work with large datasets and build insightful reports.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills; able to work both independently and cross-functionally.
