Job description

We are seeking a 4th Class Power Engineer to join our facilities team in Iqaluit, NU. Reporting to the Facilities Manager, this role focuses on routine operation, monitoring, and maintenance activities to support heating system reliability. Working closely with certified Oil Heat Systems Technicians and Plumbers, the Power Engineer helps ensure that residential mechanical systems remain in safe operating condition year-round.

Responsibilities
  • Operate, monitor, and conduct routine maintenance on oil-fired heating systems, boilers, and associated mechanical equipment in accordance with certification limits and applicable codes
  • Perform preventative maintenance tasks such as lubrication, tightening, filter replacement, visual inspections, and operational checks on boilers, pumps, motors, valves, control devices, forced-air furnaces, and hot water tanks (excluding burner servicing, combustion adjustments, or regulated repairs requiring a higher certification)
  • Monitor system performance, identify deficiencies, and report issues for escalation to Oil Heat Systems Technicians or Plumbers when specialized repairs or licensing is required
  • Assist with basic mechanical upkeep supporting heating system reliability (e.g., gasket replacements, insulation repairs, minor leak response within scope)
  • Maintain accurate boiler logs, operational data, and safety compliance documentation
  • Participate in inventory checks and provide materials recommendations for sealift/resupply planning
  • Join a rotating on-call schedule for emergency operational response
  • Travel to other communities as needed to support facilities operations
  • Follow and promote all safe work procedures, lock-out/tag-out protocols, and regulatory requirements at all times
  • Collaborate with certified Oil Heat Systems Technicians and licensed Plumbers to ensure systems remain safe and functional
Qualifications
  • Valid 4th Class Power Engineer Certification
  • Experience with operation and routine maintenance of oil-fired boilers and heating equipment
  • Familiarity with pumps, motors, basic control systems, and heat distribution equipment
  • Valid Class 5 driver’s license
  • Able to pass a criminal background check free from relevant convictions
  • Self-motivated, reliable, and able to work independently in remote environments while contributing to a collaborative team
