Overview

School District No. 83 is currently seeking: Position Title 1.0 FTE Grade 3/4 Teacher at South Canoe Elementary School. This is a temporary assignment effective September 1, 2025 to December 31, 2025 or return of teacher to full contractual FTE, whichever comes first. The assignment will decrease to 0.200 FTE upon return of the teacher.

Program Context

South Canoe is an Outdoor Learning Program and requires teachers to utilize research-based best practices, interventions, programs and strategies to implement BC curriculum in an outdoor setting for the purpose of providing an appropriate educational program for students. This includes, but is not limited to, ensuring the safety of all children during activities such as forest play, hiking, regular off-sites (field trips) and land-based learning activities.

Qualifications

• Bachelor of Arts or Education (Elementary)
• Valid BC teaching certificate and current membership in the Teacher Regulation Branch
• Certification training and/or experience in school-based outdoor education would be an asset

• Model and teach outdoor skills including risk management, personal safety and leave-no-trace practices
• Oversee and direct experiential learning excursions (at least once per week)
• Be physically capable of performing teaching duties regardless of the weather (rain, sleet, snow, heat), including the ability to walk distances over uneven terrain, carry a backpack and supplies
• Knowledge of good environmental practices and environmental stewardship in land-based learning
• Understanding of Indigenous principles and values with a passion for embedding Indigenous ways of knowing and being through regular instruction and student learning activities
• Ability to differentiate and adapt instruction for all students in indoor and outdoor learning environments
