The Role
Supply Chain Distribution is responsible for operating Sandvik Mining’s logistics infrastructure for the aftermarket. This infrastructure delivers logistics services aligned with the service requirements set by Sandvik Mining.
The Operations Manager is responsible for managing and continuously improving the Warehouse and Distribution operations of the Africa Distribution Hub. The role ensures the successful execution of warehouse operations at optimal cost, while meeting service level requirements, EHS standards, and business performance targets. There is a strong focus on operational excellence, people leadership, financial management, and continuous improvement within the logistics services operation.
Key Responsibilities
- The Operations Manager is accountable for the overall success of the warehouse and distribution function and the day-to-day management of warehouse operations in line with supply chain service requirements and budgeted costs.
- Setup strategic goals and plans for the distribution centre and satellite warehouses
- Planning, monitoring, and managing warehouse operational performance against service, cost, and efficiency targets
- Managing inventory functions including inbound receiving, outbound dispatch, and inventory control
- Drive on time in full delivery results and expectations
- Leading, managing, and developing the operational logistics warehouse team
- Ensuring execution of operations in accordance with EHS policies and global Sandvik Mining logistics processes
- Accountable for EHS performance and employee performance management
- Implementing and supporting Warehouse and Transport Management Systems (WMS/TMS) and ERP initiatives
- Ensuring daily cycle counts, bin audits, and stock accuracy checks are performed and analyzed
- Controlling and clearing blocked stock (frozen inventory)
- Managing stock adjustments, short picks, scrap processes, and returns
- Controlling vulnerable and high-value materials in line with GIA requirements
- Managing transportation of materials to customers and stock movements between stockrooms
- Maintaining and improving warehouse processes to limit financial and shrinkage risks
- Managing infrastructure integrity, capacity planning, and operational layout
- Driving continuous improvement initiatives across warehouse and logistics operations
- Managing supplier relationships and customer service levels
- Financial management including business planning, budgeting, forecasting, working capital, and cost control
- Manage stakeholders relationship for divisions being supported by the distribution centre
Your Profile
- Grade 12 (Matric) completed
- Degree in Logistics, Supply Chain Management, Industrial Engineering, Business Administration, or a related field (or equivalent experience)
- Minimum of 8–10 years’ experience in Warehousing, Distribution, or Supply Chain Management, preferably in fast paced, mining or distribution environment
- At least 5 years’ experience in a supervisory or management role, including people management and budget responsibility
- Strong knowledge of warehouse operations, inventory management, and order fulfillment processes
- Demonstrated experience in change management and leading WMS or ERP system implementations
- Valid driver’s license
