Are you a skilled artisan with a passion for keeping operations running smoothly? RCL Foods is looking for a Senior Artisan‑Utilities and Services to join our dynamic Pies Division team! The purpose of the role is to be responsible for ensuring reliable and smooth running of the plant utilities, lead a team of artisans, utilities and apprentices allocated to utilities. This role entails people management and ensuring adherence to RCL Foods Pieman’s practices. It is expected that all statutory requirements are followed, as per the OHS Act without deviation.

Minimum Requirements
  • National Diploma in Engineering studies (Electrical, Mechanical, Instrumentation or Refrigeration) is advantageous.
  • Minimum N6 in Engineering Studies is essential.
  • Trade tested / qualified Artisan in mechanical/electrical engineering/Refrigeration is essential.
  • Registration with SAQCC GAS is advantageous.
  • Competency in MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint).
  • Working knowledge of operation and maintenance of utilities equipment.
  • Registration with SAQCC GAS as CAT B.
  • Minimum of 5 years working experience in a supervisory role and with previous experience working with Ammonia refrigeration systems and other utilities equipment.
Duties & Responsibilities
  • Check the daily Plant Inspection Lists from artisans: verifying inspections are conducted to satisfactory level for critical plant including Spirals freezers, air compressors, boilers, ammonia plant, condensers, chillers, blast freezers.
  • Critical Stock and Spares Management: determine critical spare parts to keep in engineering stores and monitor wet stock (boiler fuel, cooking area coolant) to ensure smooth operation by liaising with the Buyer and Storeman.
  • Troubleshooting and Repairs: assist team in fault finding as per escalation process.
  • Address issues pertaining to low MTBF or long MTTR including recurring issues.
  • Ensure that all breakdowns triggering an RCA are conducted within set time.
  • Ensure that all NCR’s are closed on time and of good quality.
  • Liaise with service providers (both contractors and suppliers) to ensure adherence to Pies’ expected quality and safety regulations.
Compliance
  • Ensuring adherence to all OHS Act as per act 85 of 1993 regulations by all employees and contractors on site.
  • Ensuring adherence to all safety regulations related to ammonia handling, pressure vessels, critical valves and other statutory requirements as per OHS act, SANS 10147 and other relevant regulations.
  • Ensuring all statutory inspections are completed on time as per schedule (including but not limited to pressure vessels, boilers, compressors, Earth leakage testing, fuel storage tanks, lighting, emergency generator, emergency lighting, fire sprinklers and their emergency diesel pump).
  • General Building: ensure the general building adheres to Act 103 of 1977, as outlined on SANS 10400 (existing and renovations).
  • Documentation: keep detailed records of inspections, maintenance and repairs.
  • Developing quick fix routines within areas of responsibility.
  • Develop and amend safe work procedures and safe work instructions.
  • Quality Control: ensuring all quality, housekeeping, safety and production standards are adhered to.
  • Training and supervision: assist technicians and provide training to apprentices and assistants.
Team Management

Maintain a healthy working relationship with the team and amongst the team.

  • Manage shift roster and ensure that overtime is kept within statutory limit.
  • Plan and authorise weekend plant, together with the Maintenance Planner.
  • Sign off hours on Best time.
  • Ensure that all communications from management and HR reach the team of responsibility (including toolbox talks and new procedures).
  • Emergency Response: ensure team readiness for emergency procedures and safety equipment usage, including ensuring adequate training for the teams.
  • Perform any other related jobs that may be assigned from time to time.
  • Cost control: maintain monthly costs within allocated budget.
  • Sustainability: ensure continuous improvement of utilities usage across site.
