Job description
Job Title

We are seeking a Safety Specialist to join our Field Services Teams in Cape Town, South Africa.

What You Will Do
  • Promote a safety culture with a zero mindset where safety is the prime concern.
  • Encourage employee involvement in continuous safety improvement.
  • Implement the site safety management plan.
  • Conduct full safety audits to evaluate compliance with safety management plans and systems.
  • Report SHE matters and performance to the SHE Manager.
  • Liaise with Client Line and Safety Management to ensure full understanding of all safety issues.
  • Ensure Metso Minerals personnel are involved in local SHE Committees.
  • Participate in safety meetings to understand site specific requirements.
  • Perform pre-start safety reviews with the Client’s Management to facilitate “bridging documents.”
  • Coordinate the preparation of Emergency Response Plans on specific sites.
  • Identify hazards and risks through analysis and inspection of personnel, plant and environment.
  • Focus on the elimination of unsafe acts and rectify unsafe conditions quickly.
  • Conduct workplace inspections.
  • Perform safety training such as LTI’s, Risk Assessments and Safety Walk-Abouts.
Specific Responsibilities
  • Perform detail inspections at all sites in the area of responsibility.
  • When possible, the following appointed persons must be part of the inspection team: 2.6.1, 2.17.1, 2.6.2 and Safety.
  • Keep record of inspections and report all deviations from standards.
  • Check that corrective actions have been taken for deviations from previous visits.
  • When a life‑threatening act or condition exists, stop the work and rectify immediately.
  • Perform necessary safety related training on sites and office‑based training for new employees and refresher training for all existing employees.
  • Maintain detailed records of hours and shifts worked, dressings LTI reportable accidents and personal records of all staff on sites.
  • Record all accident/incident investigations and documentation pertaining to the site safety program, including safety officer daily inspections.
  • Perform audits to measure site specific requirements.
  • Design information associated with proprietary equipment and profit margins and similar commercial information.
  • No information regarding accidents or statistics may be shared with the media without the approval of Management.
  • Compile month end reports including number of shifts worked, total hours worked, number of LTI’s and high potential incidents as per SHE Manager format.
  • Manage all aspects of safety associated with materials handling bulk equipment, site construction and erection and commissioning.
Who You Are
  • Matric (Grade 12)
  • Familiar with the Health and Safety Mining Act and the Health and Safety Construction Act.
  • NADSAM or SAMTREK / Safety Officer certificate (COMSOC II).
  • Risk assessment facilitator.
  • Familiar with the process of inspections and audits.
  • Legal liability experience.
  • Hazard identification.
  • 2 Years construction/plant safety experience.
  • Valid driver’s licence.
  • Valid passport.
  • Computer literate – Essential.
Requirements
  • Technical background regarding bulk material handling.
  • Bulk material handling equipment and customer relationships.
  • Communicator – Handle customer needs & customer complaints.>
  • Handle stress in breakdown situations.
  • Plan & use own initiative.
  • Willingness / Ability to travel locally and internationally for site specific work.
  • Regular standing, walking, climbing or balancing required.
  • Occasional lifting and/or moving up to 15kg.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, colour vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus.
  • Use of keyboards, telephones, copiers, fax, visits and movement through shops and travel experiences.
  • Climbing of stairs, ladders, scaffolds at jobsites and customer facilities.
  • Harsh environmental conditions due to dust, heat, wind and rain.
  • Must be medically fit to perform site specific duties.
