A renowned consultancy firm in Johannesburg is seeking a Regional Legal Counsel to provide critical legal support across the business, particularly in the renewable energy sector. The successful candidate will advise senior management, negotiate contracts, and ensure regulatory compliance while managing significant transactions. The ideal applicant will have 6-10 years of post-qualification experience in energy-related law, be qualified to practice in South Africa, and possess excellent communication and decision-making skills.

Job description
POSITION: Regional Legal Counsel
REPORTING TO: Legal Director
LOCATION: Johannesburg
SCOPE AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Work closely with the senior management team in South Africa to provide legal advice to their operations;
  • Develop and provide compliance related training programs and activities;
  • Working collaboratively with other corporate staff;
  • Negotiate, draft and review commercial agreements;
  • Support business and finance team on B-BBEE certification and compliance;
  • Provide legal advice to the Human Resources and Finance teams;
  • Work collaboratively with Energy in-house legal and commercial staff in other jurisdictions on projects (primarily in African continent and Middle East);
  • Provide necessary training to the business on legal topics;
KEY QUALIFICATIONS:
  • The successful candidate will have 6-10PQE with at least 4 years of energy and project related legal experience gained from leading law firm and/or in-house at an MNC (renewable energy industry preferred);
  • Candidates must be qualified to practice law in South Africa or other common law jurisdictions;
  • Understanding or experience with Sharia Law and Civil Law jurisdiction practice is a big plus.;
  • Solid experience in handling South Africa law governed contracts, in particular, contracts for supplying wind turbines and BESS and related long-term services;
  • High level proficiency in English language is required;
  • Comfortable with oversight of commercial contracts, procurement contracts, labor & employment, litigation and regulatory compliance;
  • The candidate must be mature and able to work independently and successfully manage large-scale transactions and project teams;
  • Excellent client service and communications skills (oral and written).
