Introduction

An exciting opportunity exists for a Project Finance Attorney / Associate (3–6 years PQE) to join the highly reputable Finance & Projects team of a leading International Law Firm based in Johannesburg.

This position is ideal for a technically strong commercially aware attorney with demonstrable experience in infrastructure energy project development PPPs project agreements regulatory advisory and complex cross-border transactions.

About the Role

As an Associate in the Finance & Projects team you will work on high-profile large-scale infrastructure and energy projects across South Africa and the African continent.

The practice advises a broad range of clients including private sector developers sponsors consortiums project companies DFIs EPC contractors operators industrial suppliers and occasionally public-sector entities.

You will play a leading role in drafting negotiating and advising on key project and regulatory documents including :

  • Concession Agreements
  • PPP Agreements
  • Power Purchase Agreements (PPAs)
  • Construction Contracts (EPC O&M)
  • Equipment Supply Agreements
  • Consortium Agreements & Shareholder Agreements
  • Procurement Documentation (where applicable)

A strong understanding of the regulatory landscape governing infrastructure and energy projects is essential including the application of PFMA PPPFA Promotion of Administrative Justice Act (PAJA) Promotion of Access to Information Act (PAIA) Electricity Regulation Act Sector-specific regulations and policies

Key Responsibilities
  • Drafting and settling project agreements regulatory opinions and infrastructure / energy advisory documents.
  • Leading and managing complex transactions within the infrastructure and energy sectors.
  • Building and maintaining relationships with existing clients and actively contributing to business development initiatives.
  • Working as part of a global cross-border team on multi-jurisdictional matters.
  • Contributing to thought leadership (e.g. publishing in industry publications or the firm’s e-publication).
  • Supporting and supervising junior attorneys including training on drafting and legal analysis.
  • Playing a visible role in client pitches presentations external seminars and sector-focused events.
Requirements – The Successful Candidate Will Have :
  • 3–6 years PQE in Project Finance / Infrastructure / Energy / Finance & Projects within a reputable law firm.
  • Strong technical capability in drafting and negotiating project agreements.
  • Demonstrated experience advising on South African infrastructure and energy regulatory issues.
  • Experience acting in a lead role on transactions and managing deal workstreams.
  • Strong commercial judgment and the ability to deliver high-quality client service.
  • Proven ability to mentor supervise and train junior lawyers.
  • Excellent communication skills interpersonal skills and professional presence.
  • Experience contributing to business development training or thought leadership.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced international environment.
