Job summary

A customs management company in Johannesburg is seeking a Customs Department Manager to oversee operations and ensure compliance with customs procedures. You will be responsible for customs clearances, training junior staff, and setting up efficient working procedures. The ideal candidate should have a relevant tertiary qualification and 3-5 years of experience in customs. Knowledge of the Jacobson's Tariff is essential.

Job description

Responsible for the smooth running and overseeing of the Customs Department for the Company and ensuring that the company follows the Codes of Good Practice and is in line with their Customs Accreditation.

Job Function – Johannesburg team
  • Main responsibility to ensure that the day to day Customs Clearances for both Import and Export are carried out timeously and correctly to avoid any penalties from the Department of Customs and Excise as well as third party suppliers
  • To assist and train the Junior Staff in Clearing Formalities
  • To set up procedures for the Operational Staff and the Customs Affairs staff to work on a more streamlined fashion
  • To assist and advise correct tariff classifications
  • Attend to clients / network customs queries
  • To follow up all customs refund applications to finality
  • To ensure that all RIT and Road Bond Acquittals take place
  • To organise all statutory Customs related matters
  • To assist with Permit, customs code and ITAC permit applications
  • To ensure that the junior staff gain an all-round knowledge of the Customs Tariff and Procedures
  • Regular meetings with SARS on various related changes within the industry and advise feedback
  • Offer to view current client shipments and correct tariff
  • Need to ensure the Warehouse Bond Books are up to date weekly
  • Any other delegated tasks deemed as reasonable as assigned by the reporting manager
  • To set up procedures for the Operational Staff and the Customs Affairs staff to work on a more streamlined fashion at all customs branches.
  • To organise and distribute all statutory Customs related matters on a national basis
  • Any other delegated tasks deemed as reasonable as assigned by the Reporting Manager
  • To enforce SARS compliance within the region
  • To ensure all branch operate within the code of SARS requirements
  • Roll out of all customs related internal Company procedures with all national customs teams
  • Conduct at minimum a monthly review with National Customs Managers.
Minimum Education and Experience Requirements
  • Matric
  • Relevant Tertiary Qualification
  • Minimum of 3 to 5 years experience in a similar position
  • Thorough knowledge of all aspects of customs procedures, laws and associated governmental requirements as well as a good knowledge of the Jacobsonss Tariff.
