Job description
Landscaping Assistant Manager required in Stellenbosch.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Reporting & Coordination
    • Report to the Estate’s Landscaping Manager regarding on site operations, progress, challenges, and recommendations.
    • Provide updates on landscaping progress and irrigation work.
    • Conduct planning weekly work schedules and task allocations as per instructed by landscaping manager.
  • Landscaping Operations
    • Oversee and drive the daily execution of landscaping tasks including turf care, pruning, planting, bed maintenance, edging, and general garden upkeep.
    • Monitor quality standards on site and ensure work is completed according to estate specifications.
    • Assist with seasonal planning and implementing horticultural programmes.
  • Irrigation Management
    • Conduct daily inspections of estate irrigation systems to identify dry spots, leaks, pressure problems, or malfunctioning equipment.
    • Manage irrigation schedules in consultation with the HOA Landscaping Manager.
    • Oversee minor repairs, replacements, and adjustments to valves, sprinklers, nozzles, solenoids, and lateral lines.
  • Staff Supervision & Training
    • Lead and motivate the on-site landscaping and irrigation teams.
    • Allocate tasks, monitor productivity, and ensure efficient use of labour.
    • Conduct informal skills development and on-the-job coaching for team members.
    • Conduct performance evaluations, disciplinary procedures, and general HR/IR responsibilities.
    • Oversee attendance, leave management, and weekly payroll submissions.
    • Ensure ongoing skills development and on-the-job training for staff.
    • Weekly report to head office
  • Operational Support
    • Ensure all tools, machinery, and equipment are used safely and responsibly.
    • Monitor and report any equipment faults, breakdowns, or service needs to the Landscaping Manager.
    • Assist with site-level administrative tasks including daily work logs, material usage records, and basic reporting.
    • Support the Landscaping Manager with planning of new installations, upgrades, and improvements.
  • Materials & Resource Management
    • Oversee the correct usage of fertilisers, compost, chemicals, and irrigation components.
    • Monitor stock levels and notify the Landscaping Manager when materials need to be replenished.
    • Ensure proper housekeeping of the landscaping storeroom and operational areas.
  • Health, Safety & Site Standards
    • Enforce safe working practices and ensure staff use PPE correctly.
    • Maintain neatness and organisation of all operational spaces, equipment, and storage areas.
    • Support any estate HSE instructions as communicated by the Landscaping Manager.

Requirements:

  • Matric Certificate.
  • Tertiary qualification in Horticulture, Turf Management, or a related landscaping discipline (advantageous).
  • Minimum 2 – 3 years’ experience in a supervisory or middle-management role within the landscaping or grounds maintenance industry.
  • Hands-on experience with irrigation systems, including troubleshooting and routine maintenance.
