This role requires no college degree and offers up to $40,000 in signing bonuses.
Serve as a Special Agent for interagency, multi‑jurisdictional, international, and/or inter‑organizational inquiries and investigations.
Conduct investigations of marked difficulty and responsibility associated with trade, travel, finance, and immigration for combatting illicit activities associated with individuals, businesses, employers, criminal organizations, or criminal conspiracies, and cyber systems and networks.
Utilize a combined methodology of intelligence, investigative techniques, and legal authorities to conduct investigations and associated activities.
Apply knowledge of trends, laws, and investigative case development, independently or in coordination with other law‑enforcement officers (LEOs) or agencies to accomplish work.
Prepare written documentation utilizing expert knowledge in support of investigations.
The salary will reflect the GS pay scale and be based on locality pay and duty location preferences.
Must be a U.S. citizen.
Must successfully pass a background investigation, drug screen, and selective service registration (for males born after 12/31/59).
May require a polygraph examination and travel at the candidate’s expense.
Must complete a pre‑employment medical examination, psychological evaluation, and physical fitness test (PFT).
Upon appointment, will serve a one‑year probationary period and sign a Mobility Agreement.
May be required to work alone in remote areas at times with limited communication; must carry a firearm and be able to testify in court.
Must possess a valid driver’s license before the final job offer.
Must be at least 21 years of age; application deadline is the day before the applicant’s 37th birthday.
Foreign education may be considered after credible evaluation and equivalency evidence.
Current federal employees may be required to accept a lower grade.
Eligibility for GL‑9 grade level: One year of specialized experience at the GL‑07 grade level or equivalent in areas such as narcotics, money laundering, financial crimes, human trafficking, fraud, international trade, network intrusion response, counterintelligence, counterterrorism, counterproliferation or general criminal/administrative investigations.
Higher grade levels require progressively advanced experience and education: GS‑11, GS‑12, GS‑13, etc., with corresponding degrees (master’s, Ph.D., or equivalent). Details provided in the original description.
Educational requirement: Master’s degree (or equivalent graduate degree) or at least two academic years of graduate education, accredited and relevant.
Candidate education and experience combined must meet the specified percent of the requirement.
Competencies assessed include Problem Solving, Teamwork, Interpersonal Skills, Flexibility, Conscientiousness, Managing and Organizing Information, Judgment, and others as indicated.
Mandatory completion of Basic Training: FLETC Criminal Investigator Training Program and HSI Special Agent Training Program.
Physical Fitness Test (PFT) with passing score required within 60 days of EOD.
Polygraph testing may be required; travel at own expense.
Maintain firearm proficiency and readiness to carry a firearm.
