Role Overview

The Oceanographic Research Institute (ORI), a division of the South African Association for Marine Biological Research (SAAMBR) requires a suitably qualified person to undertake the role of scientist in the coastal zone research group. This is a fixed‑term contract appointment for a period of two (2) years.

Responsibilities

Developing and undertaking research projects within the scope of the research group’s aims.

  • Overseeing donor funded research projects, ensuring their continuity, financial flows, reporting, and contribution to ORI’s research and conservation goals.
  • Analysing data and disseminating research findings in the technical, scientific and popular literature.
  • Managing a team of assistant scientists, research assistants, technicians and interns.
  • Supporting the financial and administrative management of the research portfolio.
  • Providing information and advice to policy makers on KZN coastal management issues.
  • Willingness to undertake work‑related local and international travel as needed, including occasional weekends away from home.
  • Supporting the executive manager in the execution of other projects.
Minimum Requirements for the Position
  • An MSc graduate with a strong focus on coastal zone and with an intention to pursue further studies at a PhD level in a research group‑related topic.
  • At least 10 years’ experience in coastal‑related topics and issues.
  • Peer‑reviewed publication record.
  • Ability to supervise students and interns.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills, particularly on coastal zone, and with related stakeholders.
  • Experience in synthesising and communicating science to policy and evidence‑based decision‑making.
  • Strong knowledge of coastal governance frameworks, stakeholder networks, and policy processes.
  • Coastal field survey experience.
Advantageous
  • Experience with project management including financial and administrative duties required of a project senior or collaborator.
  • Experience with Geographic Information Systems.
