Job Description :

Our client, an international mining house with operating mines and projects in Africa, is in need of a COO to lead their team, based out of Gauteng, South Africa.

The successful candidate will have experience in the management of multiple large-scale operations and projects across Sub-Saharan Africa and be well-versed in US regulatory and reporting standards.

Responsibilities
  • Managing all operational and project development activities.
  • Oversee the ramp up of existing mines and restarting of mines under care and maintenance.
  • Management of exploration licenses in Africa.
  • Driving operational transformation and the transition from junior to mid-tier producer, spearheading efforts to increase output and advance project development.
  • Ensuring company operational strategy and goals are achieved safely, efficiently and in a sustainable manner.
  • Working closely with executive team in investor due diligence processes and corporate governance.
  • Directly overseeing mine production, mineral processing, maintenance and site administration.
  • Ensuring operations run efficiently, within budget and according to set timelines.
  • Championing a culture of safety on site - ensuring high levels of SHEQ standards are implemented and maintained.
  • Continuous improvement initiatives.
  • Ensuring exploration results are integrated into mine-planning and long-term growth.
  • Providing guidance and mentorship to country management and operational teams.
  • Ensuring all technical reporting and public disclosures are accurate and compliant with regulatory standards.
Requirements : Qualification and Skill
  • Bachelor's degree in Mining Engineering, Metallurgical Engineering or similar technical field.
  • Master’s degree advantageous.
  • Professional registration or affiliation preferred.
  • French communication skills advantageous.
  • 15 years minimum experience in the technical roles within the mining industry, with 10 years’ experience in leadership positions including 5+ years in senior management or executive level roles.
  • Strong operational experience in Sub-Saharan African countries with an understanding of operating conditions, regulatory frameworks and the challenges faced in these countries.
  • Experience in corporate compliance and reporting standards for US listed entities (SEC Regulation S-K 1300 and NI 43-101).
  • Well-versed in delivering operational growth and excellence for large scale mining projects and operations across various African jurisdictions.
  • Technical expertise in gold mining as well as other base metals, with expertise in mineral processing for these commodities.
  • Experience managing both open pit and underground mines.
  • Experience in the management of multiple operations and projects simultaneously.
  • Proven expertise in increasing production, cost reduction and improving capital efficiency.
  • Strong communication skills across all levels of stakeholder engagement, from site to board and both internally and externally.
  • Willingness to travel extensively in Africa.
Contractual Information
  • Permanent contract subject success completion of initial probationary / fixed term period.
