Job Description
Here is what you will do:
  • Use ArcGIS to compile, analyse, and present geological, geotechnical, and geohazard data, including preparation of maps, plans, and figures for reports and presentations.
  • Prepare, review, and deliver weekly UK desk study reports to agreed quality and programme requirements.
  • Participate in meetings, workshops, and technical reviews, clearly articulating geological risks and constraints.
  • Assist with local geotechnical field investigations, including site inspections, mapping, logging of soils and rock, and sampling.
  • Support ground investigations such as borehole logging, test pit profiling, and supervision of drilling contractors.
  • Collect, compile, and interpret geological and geotechnical data for use in technical assessments.
  • Contribute to the preparation of technical reports, including factual descriptions, figures, tables, and interpretive summaries.
  • Assist with the assessment of geological hazards (e.g. slope instability, erosion, problematic soils, weathering profiles).
  • Maintain accurate field records and ensure data quality and consistency.
  • Work collaboratively with engineers, scientists, and project managers within multidisciplinary teams.
  • Comply with AECOM’s health, safety, quality, and environmental (HSQE) requirements at all times.
  • Travel to project sites as required, including remote locations.
Here’s what we’re looking for:
  • Demonstrated proficiency in ArcGIS (essential), including spatial data management, map production, and basic spatial analysis.
  • Basic understanding of South African geological conditions, soil and rock classification systems. Knowledge of UK geology would be an added advantage.
  • Ability to undertake fieldwork in varying site and weather conditions.
  • Good written and verbal communication skills in English.
  • Valid driver’s licence.
  • Experience with engineering geology or environmental geology projects.
  • Familiarity with geological logging standards, ArcGIS, or basic geotechnical.
  • Progress toward or eligibility for SACNASP Candidate Geologist registration.
  • Previous experience working on infrastructure, mining, water, or environmental projects.
  • Strong observational and analytical skills.
  • Willingness to learn and develop technical competence.
  • Attention to detail and commitment to high-quality deliverables.
  • Strong verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly present technical information through reports and presentations.
  • Ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a team.
  • Professional attitude when interacting with clients, contractors, and colleagues.
Qualifications
  • BSc or BSc (Hons) in Geology, Engineering Geology, or a related Earth Science discipline.
  • 0–3 years of relevant experience.
  • BSc (Hons) in Engineering Geology, or related field.
